HI,
Im pretty new to this site. I have lurked around for a while, first time on though. Thanks for all the info

I just got a used 'broken in' pair of the mentioned headphone. It seems that the big majority of those who have or heard this phone mention the bass and highs being more prominant than the mids, which are 'washed out' and the highs 'echoey'. I was curious if this was from impressions when the phone wasn't broken in? I don't seem to notice the mids washed, and the bass actually isn't as forward as people seem to make it sound. I compared these to my friend's HD595 and though you can tell differences are there, I would say they are still pretty close to being on par with each other with regard to the sound curve. I actually find this phone does awesome on rock and even european rock! My friend's phone hasn't been fully broken into yet and I have only heard these two and the Beyer 770pros, so maybe I'm just not be noticing it. Both phones were compared from being played on a home amp, so that could have something to do with it as well.
Here is the second question...this phone has no mod done to it. Would the blu-tak mod mentioned on here still help overall? Thanks in advance

Yeah, it will still help. Its not difficult to do and is pretty much completely reversible so if you don't like the end result you can always undo it. The nice thing about it is that you can sort of tune the sound to fit what you like.

If you stuff it full of cotton you'll kill the bass (it'll be tight but so lacking you'll hate the sound). I covered the entire cup area with a layer of blu-tak and then made a circular shape with an empty center with the cotton. Make sure to pull the cotton apart. It tamed the highs (got rid of the sibilance and some shrillness), brought the mids out, and the bass was both more pronounced and tighter. The end result is a better phone all around. You can play around and see what works best for you.

The amp could be why you're getting a similar sound from both phones. I noticed a pretty big difference between the A900s and HD595 (well not necessarily big, but I felt each had its own signature that was easy to discern) when I compared the two. A lot of people say the A900s don't benefit from an amp but thats not true. They don't gain volume as much as other phones but their sound does change. Try listening unamped and you might notice a sound signature closer to what others have described.
