You might have bit of trouble finding the LTD. From the little I have heard, some people prefer the LTD over the W1000, others prefer the W1000. I personally have never heard the A1000 or W1000, but my LTD is very nice. AFAIK, there isn't much info on the A1000.

I can compare the W1000 with the A900LTD.

The overall sound of the A900LTD is simply more complete/balanced than the W1000. The W1000 has great mids, high frequencies and a tight but limited amount of bass. Both are very comfortable. The sound isolation of the A900LTD is more than the W1000 but both are more than adequate, both ways: leaks out and sound in.

Everything good I have said about the W1000 I also can say about the A900LTD. The A900LTD has much better bass than the W1000. The W1000 took a bit longer to settle down for me. I ran several low pass frequencies on both and the W1000 would not handle below 50 Hz very well for the longest, several months, now it handles it well down to about 35 Hz. The A900LTD did it almost right out of the box down to 30 Hz at normal listening levels whereas the W1000 still needs some extra gain for this to be heard. Again for the A900LTD, at 20 Hz you could tell there was some fall off in the volume but it was sill there. Neither are considered portable.

I wrote up a short review of both for this web site and the detailed tabular comparison is at this link. Click on the full details link at the bottom of each column for this. Note also that I listen to instrumentals, jazz and jazz vocals, classical. I have very little agressive stuff. So what you hear about the A900LTDs mid I just do not understand.

^ Second as what has been posted by slwiser. I haven't had the chance to audition the A1000s but I do own the W1000s and A900LTDs. I too prefer the A900LTDs over the W1000s (in fact I prefer my other AT woodies over the W1000). The W1000s is a detailed sounding set of cans with a good soundstage. To me the W1000s lacks body in the mids and the W1000s doesn't have the bass extension or slam like the LTDs. The bass on the W1000s is tight and fast. The LTDs has a similar level of detail and soundstage size as the W1000s (the W1000 is a little better) but sounds smoother and more full bodied than the W1000s. The LTDs also has more bass slam and extension than the W1000s. When I received my LTDs they sounded great straight out of the box and the sound got smoother or more relaxed while still maintaining good bass slam and extension after about 150 hours of burn in. The W1000s on the other hand sound bright to me straight out of the box and after about 200 hours of burn in they toned down a little but were still brighter than the LTDs and didn't quite have the body in the mids as the LTDs.

I'm also a bit curious about the differencies between the a1000 and the a900ltd. But from the few things I've read about the a1000 it seems that the a900ltd is a little better.

Note that this can be understood in more than one way.

Go here to see a comparison from China of several of these phones:

www.erji.net As of today, May 13, the thread you need to check out is on page 10 of the many that are available in the headphones forum. It is down in the middle titled:

[3 original ]4.30 Beijing gathering A900LTD, DT880 optimum Xingjiabi well!

Use the Google language translation as needed.

I think they have a favorable opinion of the ATH-A900LTD.

I also think this shows that different cultures enjoy different sounds.

It would depend on what you're looking for and your listening tastes. The higher end AT cans isn't necessarily better than the A900s if you're currently satisfied with them.
