Can anyone here compare the sound of the AT ES7 against the AD700? These look very interesting and at a good price too... both run about $130

the ES7 is very bass-oriented; but not bloated in the least. and very good bass response. not my type of phone (as i sold mine a few days ago), but they were damn sexy w/ the mirrored cups!

will you be using the latter for home use only?

Not at all, IMO. Both are very highs-oriented headphones, but in completely different ways. It's been a whlie since I owned them, so I'll try to give just a general impression with adjectives:

AD700
light
airy
spatious
3-dimensional
bass-less
intimate
polite

SA1000
aggressive
sharp
flat
compressed
glassy
detailed
impactful

I have AD500s and an ES7.

If you are going to buy one pair for home use only I would recommend the AD500/700 as the soundstage is MUCH better. The ES7s are good, but open-air destroys closed, and the inherent limitations of a portable headphone (ES7) mean that the AD series prevails.

Having said that, the ES7s are very good headphones for portable use.
