I don't know which way to travel, and I need advice.

I have listened to several brands of headphones, nothing terribly extensive or exotic compared to some of you guys. However, I enjoy the Ultrasone brand quite a bit. I loved the 750s and 2500s and I bought the Ultrasone 2500s. I choose to use them despite looking ugly and not being the most comfortable (but enough).

Disregarding the rest of the equipment, but for clarity sake an iMod with a suitable amp is in the future (depending on which way to go).

In my possession I have the Ultrasone 2500s, the Darth "Boobies" (yes, DigitalVenom sold them to me) and the Sony 5ks (other headphones I have sold off).

Now I was wondering if I should get my 2500s recabled. This would be a permanent recabling with wires going to left and right. I like having two cables, it seems more comfortable to me. One cable with the Ultrasone 2500s is ideal with the source on the left, but that is not possible with my set up. Moving things around will not be ideal. So compromise is having each earcup with its own cable. The whole shooting match is around $400.

I have been reading that a recabling job may improve SQ, but getting a better source or better headphones is a more predictable and a more solid way to improve SQ.

Or should I sell off all my headphones and get the Edition 9s? As it is, I only listen to the 2500s, and then I can get a suitable amp for the Edition 9s.

Money is always an issue, but the actual amount is not the problem. It is wasting of it, and having gear around that never gets used. Its the whole accumulation of crap that has me wondering on which way to travel.

Advice?

I sold my D2000's because they didn't fit my head quite right. By the time I had a solution from the good folks here at head-fi, I had already sold them. Further, I found that they were then backordered at the factory level.

Instead of waiting around for them (even though I did just that for a few weeks) to end up probably selling them again somewhere down the road anyway, I just put my foot down and ordered a headphone that seems to be of great value (enjoyment/cost value) -- the Edition 9's.

I still feel I'm a bit crazy to go from $150 headphone budget 8 months ago to $300 budget 3-5 months ago to $1000+, but from what I'm reading about these, they will be well worth it.

I guess you could say that I'm doing this to avoid exactly what you're describing: ending up with a bunch of equipment and still being unsatisfied.

I ordered from NSL last Monday. Over the phone, they told me they were expecting a new shipment very soon. Well, it must have only been a couple of days away because they shipped yesterday (Thursday) and are destined to arrive on Monday. The quickness!

There are some of us that enjoy the stepwise thrill. There are others that want to get there already.

Did you audition them or the Ultrasone line before ordering?

I go in waves over this. I bought the Sony 5ks and I did not visit this site for maybe a year, maybe more. Then I auditioned the Ultrasones after feeling a need for more (I'd like to say SQ, but more likely a need for more toys). I was hooked. I decided on the 2500s and am quite happy with them. I have the dreaded wallet opening feeling there is more, and I have been reading the rave reviews about the Edition 9s. Since I already enjoy the Ultrasone signature, might as well try them. But really?

I also want the E500s or the 530 or the Ultimate Ears for my portable. As it is, I don't use that gear that often, so I am not doing that. I mean I rarely bust out the E4s now, and opt for my cheap Senns for working out (less guilt if the treadmill eats them).

I dunno. There is always the opportunity to spend more and more on something so elusive. I just want to know (more of a rhetorical question).

I've never heard an Ultrasone, but to hear the advocates tell it (Sovkiller et al) they are in quite a different league.
