The word that came to my mind is ‘honest’. It’s detailed, but not annoyingly so to my ears.

I wouldn’t say it’s bright or over-analytical in nature.

Congrats on your new SE100 folks, very sexy Dap. I own the SP1000 and love AK players. Since the UI are very similar I’ll watch this tread closely. Have any of you listen to the SP1000 before purchasing the SE100? I’m curious of the differences in sound signatures.

There's some reports from SP1000 owners in the earlier thread.

The concensus was that the SP1000 is still noticably better than the SE100.

There's people in the "upcoming &normal and &futura" thread who have compared both (having two threads going at once is getting confusing!)

If no one posts a formal Head Gear review of the SE100 by next week, I'll start doing one. It does seem odd that there's no industry reviews out there yet.

I've listened to the copper SP1000 a few times and compared it to the ak70mii and WM1Z but not the new SE100 which I just received last night. I'm very impressed with the SE100's imaging and resolution right out of the box. Later today I am going to the local store to listen to the stainless steel SP1000 and do a direct compare with the SE100.

Sadly, my SE100 won't be here until Monday. But my A&K red case is arriving today, and I've already got the Miter case here. I won't have fit impressions until Monday, but if anyone is interested I can at least share some pictures for comparison later today.

I just received my SE100. Little time to play with it and battery came ~30% on it, so need to charge.

My background on DAPs is:
FiiO x5 iii - on cursory audio, sounded good (my first DAP). Returned do to slow UI/UX and buggy interfacing with downloads
Shanling M0 - $99 so a different price category

I'm not sure if I am eloquent or experienced enough to discuss sonic differences for the many more experienced members of this forum.

Some initial impressions....

Packaging
Well packaged.
Silver/grey on black "Quick Start Guide" is trendy but hard to read

Build
Great build quality.
Trapezoidal design looks great, but is pointy.
Metal and glass is slippery.
I would really recommend some type of case to protect it and allow better grip.
I would expect some minimal case for price, but I guess same as Apple philosophy.
3 left buttons are unlabeled but intuitive

UI/UX
Just starting with it but very fast.
No bugs I have seen yet.
I'm transferring files to a 400 GB mSD, so haven't tried that interaction yet.

Sound
Great so far. Not much new to say.
I have used only the included samples including DSD via single ended (SE).

I agree, would love to have a review from someone who’s had the SP1000 like us to review the SP100. That would be ideal.

I had about 30 minutes with the SP1000 at iRiver's office in California where I was picking up my ak240 after a repair. The clarity was obvious immediately. Very well-balanced sound throughout the frequency range. No noticeable roll-off or graininess. But I can't say I was blown away. Meanwhile, the SE100 grabbed me right out of the box with it's ability to recreate the sense of space in each track. It's a cliche, but the spaciousness allowed me to pick up aspects in favorite recordings that I'd missed before. I need to get back to the SP1000 and contrast/compare.
