Astell&Kern Launches KANN ALPHA Digital Audio Player

Does anyone know if there's a way to only play songs not in playlists?

I just copied my entire music library to one of these to use at work, but I'm unsure about how to set up playlists... I don't really use playlists on my PC, it's all just tagged with genre and mood and not sure the Kann Alpha supports that. I often also just play songs that have 4 stars or more on the desktop, and not sure that has transferred over either.

You can use Foobar to play your songs, instead the native player.

On page 137 I saw someone saying that Foobar uses the native Android audio stack and does not play back at the correct bit depth or frequency, so that makes this option uninteresting to me, unfortunately.

Guess I'll check if the playlists are text based and see if I can write a script that parses the existing tags and sorts them into playlists for me, perhaps...

Not entirely sure what you to achieve, it if this helps.

I don’t use playlists either. You can set them up but it’s a very long process. I have my music setup by genre like you and if I don’t want to listen to an artist or album I just go by genre and set the play mode to shuffle all. The player has genre but not mood.

I don’t think you can play songs by rating. Not something I’ve ever done or needed. I can check for you but sorry can’t help.

First, my Kann Alpha is updated with the very latest firmware. When I try to attach it to my PC using a USB-C cable, Windows fails to recognize the device. Only when I use a USB-A cable does the internal storage and SD card drives pop up.

Still, when I try to copy a playlist to the internal storage I get this:

(It does create a 0 byte large file on the internal storage.)

And when I try to save a playlist directly to the internal storage, I get this:

What's up with this? Feels very jank.

All music I have I only managed to get across by popping the SD card directly into my PC, but that won't work for playlists.

I would recommend trying a different cable or a different USB port on the PC.

To add to Jason's response - please try a different USB cable and port. My KA connects and transfers media just fine over type C and CtoA to my PCs.

I'm not familiar with "sublime", but you can create an .m3u or even a .cue and just drop it in the folder that has the songs you want, specific syncing software not required.

Tried several cables and different ports on my PC. Still not allowed to write to internal storage or I get this:

Tried on a Linux laptop and on a MacOS laptop. Both machines can't even see the device.

Oh, except if I use a USB-A to C cable into a USB-C hub (because both laptops only have USB C... then I can write 0 byte files to the internal storage which I'm then not allowed to delete:

Either this is absolute crap, or my device is broken.

Can you store playlists on the SD card somewhere and have the device see them?

EDIT: Ok, for Mac I saw this now, which is *terrible* imo...

Are you enabling USB file transfer from the notification on the P1/KA/DAP? Android doesn't allow writing to storage until you explicitly give it permission.

Also check to make sure it's not defaulting to USB source mode or dongle dac functionality lol

USB mode is set to MTP. There is no notification that I can see (and I didn't know about the notifications panel, but I just had it open now while trying to copy a file over, and there is nothing. The only thing is the DISK circle that lights up (and if I press that, it switches to DAC mode).

EDIT: I just checked the user guide. There is no mention about any notification having to allow writing to storage that I could see.

Ok, I now tried it on my work laptop and I did not have any .m3u files on there so I just had to copy a random file AND IT WORKED!

So then I went testing... I am able to copy over any files EXCEPT M3U FILES!

What??????????????????????????? (Oh, this forum sanitizes curses... ok then, here... 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬😝)

@JasonNYC can you shed light on this matter? Two different computers now confirmed to react the same.

Literally the first Google hit:

Turns out it's a limitation with MTP, looks like it always has been. Makes sense since .m3u files contain links to the media files, which may be in odd places due to DRM (which is the point of MTP). If it's in the root folder directory as the rest of the files it should work in theory, same if it is synchronized with a program that can write the drm data store shenanigans.

Tldr blame MTP, it's not A&K or even an Android problem. Use MSC mode or a different playlist format, or sync it with MusicBee/Media Monkey/WMP

I don't know half of those words you just said, I've never owned an Android device before and now probably never will again. I still contend it's a horrible user experience.

However, one tidbit that I'm not sure I missed in the manual: The bloody playlists don't have to be in the internal memory playlist folder. They can be placed anywhere and they will still work!

(Which is lucky, because for some reason in all of this, the manually created playlists I had begun on suddenly all started to show 0 songs...)

I understand, so please just at least try to simply read the last 2 sentences I typed ☺️

If you want to know why your .M3U files don't work via drag and drop (part of your question), then try to understand what .M3U files are. Same for MTP. A car brake pedal and gas pedal do what's expected when the driver understands what they do 🙃

As simple as I can restate it, for you and anyone that stumbles here later: It's not because of Android. It's not an A&K issue either. Your issue has solutions I provided previously - I hope you read, learn, and enjoy your music 🎧
