I've been trying to figure that one out myself. The ones I've gotten from Astell&Kern in my SP3000 box had fine scratch lines across them.

Try a soft reset. While the player is on, press and hold the power button for 10 - 15 seconds until the player shuts doen and restarts, then try the firmware download again.

No and I'm not sure any variations have a difference. I thinks it's all the precious metal coatings that make the others special. Gold and platinum

I’ve never heard a difference, and in the case of the silver and black they’re both steel so there should be no difference. A&K do ground the circuit to the case and some people claim they hear a difference between the steel and copper versions and A&K have never denied it, as far as I know. The output power is quoted in the specifications on their web-site but do notice that it does state ‘no load’, which is about as meaningless a specification as one could wish for.
