ASL MG Head DT/OTL MKIII Tube Rolling Experience

Raytheon windmill getter 5751's are expensive as the devil. There is a guy on EBay selling them for $90 per tube, but I'd be worried about these being genuine (they may well be, but I do not buy US tubes from Asia as a rule...)

okay, thanks for telling me that. Maybe I will look for something else.

hooray! I will get this brilliant amp tomorrow. This is my first time for buying a tube amp. I will find some tubes to replace the stock ones and tell you guys how they sound. ^^

re Raytheon 5751/windmill - this past Saturday one sold at auction (eBay) for $52+. It seemed the seller was good and in the US. I'd bid on it and then forgot about it because at 10 hours before auction end it was at $46 (or 7).........leading me to believe it probably would have sold way too high. I goofed. Just 1 1/2 - 2 years ago I bought 4 of them @ $28-31 a piece.........man, times have changed. It's even harder to get a Sylvania Gold Label Triple Mica Blackplate (some consider = or better). The 5751 is THE MOST IMPORTANT tube you wil change in either your ASL MG Head OTL, or Ming Da MC84. You will be happily surprised at the SQ both of these amps will provide with the "good" tubes in them.
Regarding 6BQ5 (EL84's) - if you can - stick with Amperex, Mullard (do NOT get the "re-issue Mullards" thinking they're the same - not at all), or Telefunken. You will be glad you did.
If you have 'phones that require great amounts of juice (high ohm eg. k340, or dt990/600) get a Ming Da mentioned above. I know Skylab also has one. With good NOS tubes - it is fantastic for the less than THE $400 it costs.

Thanks BushGuy, I will try to find some local shop to buy some tubes, not sure what I can get.

Yup - that is all very, very true. I use Mullard EL84's in my Ming-Da. I also use Mullard CV4004's for the 12AX7/5751 tubes - and that makes for a just beautiful mate with my DT770/600's.

Hey guys, any cheaper options for changing tubes? I found out that all Amperex, Mullard, or Telefunken 12AX7 are quite expensive...

I thought the ASL sounded excellent with an all-Sylvania set - grey-plate 6BQ5's and black-plate 5751's. But the main problem with this amp is actually that the tube types used are a little expensive.

Hmm I will give Sylvania a try. And just wonder did you try Ei EL84 before?
I found one pair of Ei EL84 which I can afford

No - I have not tried the Ei. I'm really a NOS tube kind of guy

Another good and potentially less expensive option would be GE 6BQ5's and 5751's. The GE 5-star 5751's are excellent, and surprisingly affordable (probably because they are still relatively plentiful since there were so many made).

I just bought a pair of Sylvania black plate 5751WA which cost me $55...
I found that my 5751 are golden printing labels. I just wonder whats different between the golden printing and green printing?

I found the stock EH X7 tube sounds direct and fast, quite suit for hip hop music. And this Sylvania ones are much more smooth~~~

It's a little hard to tell from the pictures, but it looks like yours are the better black plate versions. If so, nice find at that price!
