Personally, not into how the kpop industry has turned into, but there is no denying the effort it takes to be a performer. Lots of hard work, continual practices, rehearsals. Being an 'idol' is very tough. A lot of them start out from a very young age in training camps, and takes years of practice to become a performer.

I think BoA is a prime example of this. I found this documentary very interesting, and reveals how much effort and motivation it takes. She's probably one of the earliest one that was 'trainee' from a young age that the whole industry is now modeling after. Based on this video, it's not just talent potential, but it's apparent that it's significant amount of effort involved of the performer, their mindset, etc..

Retro 90's style. 1st gen kpop has a certain sound qualities that is different from today. It's was a lot of experimentation, so varieties of concepts. Simple production, and looked very amateur compared to today's high production. But, this low production amateurish experimentation era has a charm to it due to the spontaneous of it's music. It wasn't formulaic like today's kpop.

Here's an example of 90's really amateur looking video.
