Are you sure your ears are clean enough to hear properly?

This thread is positive proof that you should never let anyone use your ear bud or canal phones, or use someone else's ... ever.

I use a U shaped straw and put one end in my ear, and the other in my mouth. Then I suck all the earwax out.

It tastes like popcorn.

Hardly. A significant fraction of head-fiers is Asian so I think many can empathize

I clean my ears twice a week.

I happened to be at my physician's office for an annual checkup last week and was happy with his findings and the overall outcome of that routine event. While there I asked him to take a careful look into my ears to see if earwax had accumulated and might need attention. He said they were 'clean as a whistle', i.e., just fine and that was good news.

I did go through a home-cleaning regimen a few months ago using the commercial product Debrox, which is a glycerinated version of hydrogen peroxide. Years ago I adopted a pattern of using Debrox once a year on the day after my birthday, so this is not a new thing for me. I performed the cleaning more recently since I was acquiring a set of Etymotics ER4s IEMs and wanted to feel good about using them in clean ear canals. This method is cheap, easy and seems effective. Other than an occasional wipe with a Q-tip I don't fret over this matter a great deal.

If you find yourself getting a physical exam it would only take an extra two minutes to ask the physician to take a close look at your ears and then act accordingly.

Yup, I did and do the same thing. But I use a different brand, I think it's "Otix" or something like that. The combo of glycerin and peroxide bubbling in my ear canal combined with a good squeeze of pressurized water does the trick. But I do cheat and swipe around with a Q-tip just to dry it out and satisfy my urge to itch.

lol Well, I'll admit I'm asian as well (3/4 Japanese, 1/4 Philipeno). No problems with my ears...but then again, my mommy always called me special.

I used to get a huge wax buildup every 10 years or so, and need to get it flushed by a doctor. Since I was roughly 10 I've played in lots of bands (orchestra and jazz bands when younger, rock, blues, and fusion bands in my college years).

The past number of years I've been cleaning my ears with q-tips. I was recently told not to do that, it can jam the wax in the ear. Since I hadn't had my ears flushed in over 10 years, I decided to put in the solution that softens the wax, and then go get them cleaned (in the past, the doctors have recommended this softener you get over the counter, and I've used it a few times before).

Anyway, my ears were killing me after putting this stuff in. I actually had to go to the urgent care center. The doctor looked in my ears, and said "there's no wax at all". My ears hurt like mad for a day and then stopped hurting.

I followed up with a visit to an ear, nose, and throat specialist - they said the same thing - no wax. He said the solution I put in must have gone right up to my eardrum and caused the pain and irritation. He also said to be careful to get water out if I flush them, as that's an easy way to get an infection.

So for me, using the q-tips works well, I don't jam the wax in there, and it keeps my ears clean.

If you think your ears are dirty, I recommend going to a doctor to find out before you try anything - you can really mess yourself up putting stuff in your ears, and if you don't have wax buildup you might just irritate them without actually doing any good. Be very careful with the q-tips as well, I don't recommend using them unless you also get a doctor's opinion, as for some people they can do more harm than good.

I stopped using qtips after I hurt my ears 2 times some months ago. Couldn't ear for 2 weeks from 1 side (enabled some nice experiments with the balance button), after I jammed the earwax in. I had a little conversation with my doctor regarding this and I was advised not to use it and just to clean it well after showering with the towel, or to go to a local hospital to get a simple ear-wash. I think I also have that "hard-earwash" you talked about but the thing is I'm an asthmatic for 23 years and that causes an excessive production of ear-wax too.
