Are there serious problems with Wadia?

For the longest time I have been lusting after a nice black Wadia 301 with digital inputs. It would be my "end it all" source and enable me to finish my dynamic system for good, unless the L3000 lust starts up again. Finally, with the sale of my snowmobiles, I have the cash to pull the trigger. However, looking at the pricing lately of their used units, something concerns me a bit.

I have noticed that several Wadia units are being dumped for rather low prices lately (301's for $1600, 1700) where normally they go for $2100, 2200. This got me wondering what was going on and I started doing some research.

I could be wrong, but it appears that Wadia's service is non-existant. There's this horror story here, with the responses to his thread sharing a similar story.:

Here again, another three people:

I also came across this post here claiming more long waits and non-responsiveness from them:

Now I know that Wadia has a troubled past, but there are all recent posts, within the last couple of months. A Wadia CDP would really be the solution to my problems but there is no way I'm going to spring for one which can't be repaired/upgraded. Especially because the likelyhood of finding one with the digital inputs pre-installed is quite low, so I would be shipping mine off to Wadia for repair.

Am I being paranoid or is there something going on here?

Well built and sounds like music. In a class with Levinson and Audio Research and a better value used.

The problem for me is when technology moves on, I am afraid of being stuck with a boat anchor.

I was the jp11801 in one of the threads on Audiogon and it was not until that post that I received satisfactory customer service. It took months to repair and many calls to their service dept went un answered. By the time I got to Jon Schaefer he was great and worked well with me (although my last email sis go unresponded). The issue is they just do not have enough resources to satisfy their customers. My repair took several months with multiple missed deadlines. While I would have liked Jon to follow up with my issue regarding my repair I am not going to track him down about it.

I hope they have gooten back on their feet as I like the company, product and think Jon Schaefer is a good guy. Here's to hoping they have beefed up their customer service and repair depts

Since listening to a Reimyo recently I have been seriously shopping for an upgraded source an have come across similar Wadia complaints. My situation is a little different in that I was planning on purchasing a used Wadia 860 and immediately shipping my Wadia off to Great Northern Sound for mods and a general once over, knowing that I could then rely on them in the future if anything went wrong.

I would not be too concerned, since any Wadia you purchase will probably be out of warranty, I think GNS should be able to repair any problem in a more timely manner.

I talked to them and they can't upgrade to the digital inputs. No mod house can for that matter.

This is quite annoying.

when I asked Wadia they were out of boards with no new builds in sight

That's another part about this hobby that I love. You can drop a wad of cash on a "quality" item and STILL have someone tell you your POS isn't good enough, so you can drop ANOTHER wad to improve it....

There is a very simple answer to this, when someone decries your source, your listening ability, taste in music, discriminative abilities and so on ..
just politely ignore them....says the man happily listening to a $60 DVD player at home and a Creative Zen Xtra at work

Not long ago, I bought my Wadia 830 with the digital inputs on Audiogon. i know of Wadia's repair issues in advance, but the unit was so highly recommended I jumped in anyway. I must say after a couple of months that I'm totally happy with my choice. I use the optical input to play my itunes play lists. Can't tell the difference when I A/B my CDs.
