I'm contemplating saving up for a pair of Sony MDR-R10s. but the price tag seems just too much. Are these headphones really that good? I mean, do they trump all other headphones?
I have the HD650, K701, UE10, HD600, DT880, DT770, Ultrasone HFI700, Ultrasone Proline750, Denon D5000, The ATH W5000 (which I'm returning cause i despise the sound), Sony MDR 7509, and I'm thinking about getting the Sensaphonics XS 2.........are the Sony R10s going to be better than all these, and provide isolation?
I prefer the R10s over all of the aforementioned by a large margin. Just like the W5000, it really doesn't isolate all that much. And no, the R10 does not sound particularly like the W5000 despite their both being wooden closed cans.

Supposedly, according to the impressions I've read, ED9 comes close to R10, and bests it in some areas, but where R10 rains supreme, it does so with authority.
i've had the chance to hear an ED9 (minty fresh, not broken in however) against the R10. And honestly the signature isn't anything alike, and personal preference leans towards the R10 (and all the big boy Grados) versus the Ultrasone, which was high, sharp and roundy in comparison.
I prefer the R10 driven by the Raptor over every dynamic headphone I've heard. The only one I think is competitive with the R10 is the electrostatic Stax SR-007, and it has a very different type of sound than the R10. Not necessarily better, just different sound that's roughly equivalent in overall quality.
The R10 is really that good. I never heard one until about a month ago. Before that, the W5000 and L3000 were my favorites. They each have their strengths and weaknesses. The R10 seems to have many strengths and very few weaknesses, if any.
If I had to say, I think the R10 is weaker in bass impact and is less up-front or energetic than some other headphones. But under many conditions these qualities are not necessarily weaknesses.
I really wished the high-end AT's I like so much sounded more competitive vs. the R10. Unfortunately, this 15+ year-old amazing headphone is discontinued.

In or out of production?
In production, the Ed.9 (already mentioned), the Stax O2, and the TakeT H2. Keep in mind I have never heard these headphones, this is based on what I have read.
I guess in production as out of production, if great, tends to fetch such high prices.
The Ultrsone 9 has drawn my attention as I would like one truly reference quality headphone. I wonder why no one has been able to match the R10's? I have never heard them but have no doubt on everyone's statement referring to the quality sound of the R10's.
Proved that despite its huge size the CD3000 can be shoved down one's throat.

I preffer the R-10 over all those mentioned above by a good margin. Now if you can get the Edition 9, it will be really great, and IMO will be the closer ot it, and better than all of those as well, and you will not miss the R-10 at all...I stopped looking for them after I got the Editions...
I'm sure they sound amazing, providing you have a sufficiently good source and amplifier.
My GS1000 are unlike any other headphone I've heard on my rig, but if I plug them into my brothers rig or his Creative Zen Vision M, the sound is not even close to what I get out of my CD player. It sounds good, sure, but it's by no means the same.
I'm sure the R10 will give you a similar experience. Without a great input signal and amplifier, they surely won't sound their best.
