They rated well and sound good but just curious, lets say I have an old ipod nano touch that I use for portability and battery life to just listen to music during my daily hour long train rides to work will these buds be a good pic? Obviously need to have good quality songs to put them to use and not the rusty 128kb etc. Or would I have to buy those portable mp3 players that improve the sound quality and spend a couple hundred more? Just thinking how to put them to good use as all I do is listen to variety of music to pass my time on the train each way daily

Yes, very good, in a variety of ways. Expensive though, and you have to wonder if Shure just wanted 'a larger piece of the pie', so to speak, to charge 1k. But they certainly are very good.

As far as the Nano, you have to try (try googling SE846 + 'your Nano model'). I would think the Apple stuff is safe. One danger is hiss in the source as these IEMs will bring out any fault in the source, as you know. But is Apple is a safe bet?

Actually, I don't know if Apple's entire line are safe, but I'm guessing (I maybe off).

note: others will now talk on to some length, while correcting me, thank you :)

A lot of people like them, I hated them. I owned a pair for awhile, and tried several tips, I never did figure out what all the fuss was about. For about the same price, I would go with CA Andromeda’s.
