The only major things superior or should I say different in a positive way about the V6/7506 is the sealing (more, can be used in fairly noisy places, something Vertigo failed to mention) and the bass (big, thumping with an amp, pocket or fixed). Apart from that it's pedantically 'detailed', quite tiring to listen to and less handy for portable use. But for short term use on say a half hour daily commute and sporadic listening throughout the day, both are equally good choices. It just depends on whether you want that slamming bass or not., and whether your chosen mode of travelling is noisy or not.

I personally found the HFI650s to sound very hollow in the midrange... was a very weird sound to me, there is literally (or was literally, when I demoed a pair) a void in the midrange

I personally did not like that, but then again vocal lushness is one of the things i value the most from my music...

To my ears the HFI650s are more like V6 whereas D66 are more like Audio Technica A900/A1000s

Hi Duncan,

Hollowness in the midrange is a huge no-no for me. That's where all the vocals are. I note that you own the both the D-66s and the AT-900s. Are the 900s workable as a portable hp? I do not intend to walk around with hps, but use them while riding, at work, etc. I am concerned about robustness. Supposedly the HFI-650s have it. I have heard some concerns about the D66s ruggedness, although they are considered true portable hps. Are there any other portable hps of like audio quality worth considering? (Note: I am seriously considering the ATH-W1000s as my main hp set.)

since i have both, i've gotten a couple of pm's asking this very question. here is my short answer:
"with an amp:
while the d66 has an overall more even frequency response, the v6 has a bigger sound, deeper bass and higher treble extension. the mids on the v6 are pushed up into the lower treble range, and so sound recessed, while the d66 mids sound more natural. the v6 seems to have more ease at reproducing music, while the d66 seems to balance right on the edge of being a full-sized phone, and has a slightly smaller sound.
without an amp:
the d66 performs much better than the v6 without an amp. it lacks the deep bass an amp gives it, but is more forgiving of poor or weak amplification than the v6. the d66 is a v6 killer out of the headphone jack of most sony minidisc units. i hope this helps."

so with an amp, i think the v6 edges out the d66, for frequency extension and an "ease" with reproducing music, and a full-sized can bigger sound. without an amp the d66 is the winner.

JAP,

No... The A900s are not ideally suited to portable equipment, it makes them sound a little cold (not anywhere near as cold as those Ultrasones though

) and they are WAAAAAAAAAY too huge for that also...

As Redshifter has said just before me, the classic V6 is still worthy of consideration... but they require an amp moreso than the versatile D66...

Red ~ or anyone else who owns both the D66 and V6...

Which of the two would you consider to have the best quality bass response?

best bass response? v6--despite the upper bass hump, just goes deeper than the d66.

I had both the v6 and d66 for a short period until recently when I sold the v6. Out of my R55 headphone jack the v6's bass goes wayy deeper than the d66 does. The eggos have their own distinct way of doing bass which I find kind of "cute" in the little cups of theirs (don't ask me why). Since I find the eggos having a much wider soundstage than the v6 does, the bass sounds a bit more distant but it's there. Very enjoyable and musical to my ears. I like to sum the v6 bass as in your face thumping as you would expect from a home theater sub or something whereas the d66 strives to stay more tamed and accurate and fun in their own little way.
