ya take your average iphone. now to buy a case for that you will spend $40-$50. for that price you could get some decent iems.

Do the 840s increase their bass with burn-in? Any experience?

Absolutely!  I'd recommend anywhere from 50 to 150 hours of burn-in time.  I should note that while the 840 has a nice weighty low end it is by no means a bass monster.

4:customer service from the company
 
Price to me means nothing. I've had more expensive, and top end headphones from other companies, and the SRH 840s blow them away, in every department. In my book the SRH 840's are High end, and near top end, right under the 940's.

all 4 of those criteria deserve an A+ from shure and the srh840.
 
except for comfort i would give that a B as some people loathe it's comfort.

hmm... I've plugged SRH-840 in my main rig: Cary 306 SACD / Van den Hul The Second (RCA carbon ICs) / Corda Prehead 1 (heavily modded)
Definitely these are the best dynamic headphones I've ever heard in my house. They surpass K701, HD650, DX-1000, DH800 and many other dynamics I've had here (don't even count K1000). Ultimative neutrality, linear FR. Almost any coloration. Superb instrument separation and focus. Bass is well controlled, impactfil and rich. A combiranion that makes to forget about it. Isn't it the goal of any audio gear? Any of my previous cans couldn't make me to forget about them. HD650 were close but they're not so neutral due to the peculiar FR.
A peak in upper mids is the only issue with this combination... But I can hear something like that with the staxes when they're plugged in the Cary so it may be the source. My other CDP is not here.

 Thats pretty high praise for the 840s. I found mine to sound headphoney and ordinary. Maybe its your ridiculously badass source thats making them sing.

Try the SRH940's if you think the 840's are pretty stellar. You'll melt. And then you'll be like, "They only cost what?" when you compare them to something twice the cost, or more.

Yes, I don't consider openess as the main quality of the headphones. Neutrality, Instrument/vocal imaging, instrument focus and separation are more important to me. O2mk2 sound headphoney and have restricted headstage but are one of the best headphones I've ever heard.
BTW after more than 150hrs burn-in SRH-840 sound very open and are definitely the most open-sounding closed headphone I've heard.
