So I just purchased a pair of K702's, and I have to say it's a sound I wasn't expecting at all. I remember hearing a pair of these at a local head-fi meet, and the ones I just purchased sound very different than what I remember.

I'll save the judgments as to whether it's a "good" sound or not (that will take some time), but I am left wondering if maybe my pair of headphones are defective? The bass is there. The mids are there. But the treble sounds a little "grainy", kind of thin, and a bit far back. When I hear just human vocals, with no drum beat (so, for instance, a youtube ad) the sound just feels so far back, and almost slightly muted.

Is this the way it's supposed to sound? Or could my pair be defective? It absolutely could just be a case of me not being accustomed to a new sound - my previous pair of headphones are the HD-650, where the treble is a bit more "forward", so it could just be thinking the K702 more "far back" than other people would.

Any thoughts? Is it immediately apparent when a headphone is defective, and does it sound like mine are? Or is this the way the K702's normally sound?

Did you buy them new? With many headphones, it will help to leave them playing music to themselves for over 24 hours to get some burn in time. Both my pairs of decent headphones improved quite a lot once left burning in for a while. The drivers on headphones do seem to sound better once they have had music playing through them for a while. Other people will know better than me but I think this should help if you haven't already done this.

702s are notorious for the long "burn-in" period, 40 to 200hours.  But they do benefit from long burn-in, so give them some hours overnight before coming to conclusions and read reviews and impressions on this site to learn more. Try the leaving them alone for a while and going back to them, they'll grow on you, and if the bass isnt to your liking try the 65th anniversary pads.
