Is that just a cover over the driver, or is it part of the driver itself?

I don't like the way the *film* is depressed in in some areas when it is taut in the rest - is it just cosmetic?

Maybe I need some new cans - HD650s maybe...

hmm...my Senn HD280's look aomewhat like that....they still sound alright to me....I think it's alright, unless something doesn't sound right [ie. rattling sounds during playback, etc]

If it plays fine, then I see no reason to worry.

That is a perfectly normal, healthy HD600.

The driver is the plastic dome shape with a pale red ring around it in the very center of the picture. It is in good condition. What you see around it is a ring of resonance-dampening cloth. Mine is a similar condition, with parts depressed and other parts smoother. That's by no means the driver!

well, I was hoping someone could help me justifying getting new cans

...but I guess it's good that it's nothing to worry about.

As for the picture, it's from an Olympus 3040 ZOOM - in *macro mode*.
