are MS-2 harsher than MS-1?

i have read through all the old posts, but there doesnt seem to be much comparison between these two. I like my MS-1's, but am wondering if i made the right choice.

I am mainly concerned about the MS-2's being overly harsh in the high end, because if my MS-1's (when they were stock) were any harsher, it would have been too much for me. And I use flats too.

the MS2 is a really beautiful can though, and seems more durable than the plastic, which would be good for backpack carrying

Any opinions on the matter would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I haven't heard the MS-1, but I think my MS-2 is anything but harsh (for a Grado, anyway). I've owned several Grados and I can say with confidence that the MS-2 is smoother/less harsh than any of them. They sound great with all kinds of music IMO. However, they are slightly more neutral than any Grado under the SR325. That can be a good thing, but it's that neutrality and smoothness that slightly detracts from the Grado "fun" factor. I consider the SR225 to be more fun, but with that comes a bit of added fatigue and harshness. Flats on the 225 definitely help to smooth it out and tame the high end a bit.

I've never heard Grados out of a tube amp, though. For all I know, tube amps just might eliminate the harshness that comes with some Grados...I'd love to find out but the SM V3 is so tempting!

By more neutral, you mean that they dont have that extended high end that makes grados so aggresive and in your face? That sounds great. I personally hate that agrressive nature, but love many aspects about the grado sound. It has a sort of feathery-light quality to it. Grados seem to me like a light salad, whereas Sennheisers seem like a big bowl of pasta. they are both great, but for different reasons

So maybe the MS2's are up my alley. They sure do look badas s

Has anyone out there tried both the MS-1 and MS-2?

Source also plays an important part on this...

I've had my MS2 for awhile, and I did notice a slight harshness every now and then (very rare) and that might also because of the record too though.

Put it this way, the goodness is much much more than the possible harshness on some certain part of some records.

hmmm. I know what you mean. But sometimes I just cant get past harshness. It seems to take me right out of the music and start listening to the headphones. I like cans to be invisible

i actually returned a pair of RS-1's I had a while back, because I couldnt get past the coloration. But I do really miss that sweet sweet midrange.

I guess Im trying to figure out how harsh this harshness is. Will it overcome the goodness?

no headphones are perfect. They come with their pluses and their drawbacks too. Just need to learn which imperfection you can live with.

Hmmm.... this just sounds so bloody similar like an answer for DSLR cameras...

Anyway, but if you ask some Senns guys, they'll tell you that perfect headphone = HD650

I just want something as close as possible that I can take to work and on walks and so on and so forth. Maybe I need the HP1000
