... electronic/ambient music? I'm not talking about club/dance music - more atmospheric stuff. Bass is important. I also listen to lots of music with heavy distortion. I'm guessing that'll sound the same with whatever headphone I use.

I just picked up a Little here on Head-Fi (thanks Jopi) so I'm thinking of buying a 'phone to use it with. I only have a couple portables (PortaPro, KSC-35) and the Grado SR-80 right now. I love them all. Nor am I what you fellows would probably consider an 'audiophile...' I'm very forgiving with audio; music is my main passion - audio quality is nice, but I'm not as much of a freak as some of us around here. With that said, if I was looking for a nice quality home-headphone, is the HD600 the way to go? The Beyerdynamics also look very nice - esp. the one pair (I forget the model #) that is often praised as having lots of warm bass. DT-770 maybe?

Of course, the Ety 4P's are also on my "must-get" list. I can't decide if I should go for the Etys, or a nice non-plug phone, or ... *gulp* both?

Thanks for any help,

If what you're talking about is close to the music on the Bladerunner soundtrack then the HD600's have my vote. The HD600's have a nice airy sound to them so I found listening to the synth stuff on the soundtrack to be quite nice.

I'd say the DT770pro would be a good choice, they're one of my favourites for stuff like Autechre, BOC etc.
They also offer the kind of isolation that makes ambient electronica very enjoyable; your own little world of sound

I'm listening to TD right now thru HD600s and a Max. The bass is excellent--perhaps a bit more understated than the DT770 but still very nice. The midrange is much clearer. I own both and, at least right now, would take the HD600 over the Beyer for electronic music, or actually for any music.

Bear in mind that the general opinion around here (though not everyone agrees) is that the HD600 really shines through good amps such as the Max.

Thanks for the info. I don't have a Max, though, and I doubt I will for a while. I know there are much better amps than the Little, but that's the one I'll be sticking with for a while, at least...

So if I don't have an ultrahighfidelity amp - is the difference negligible?

My opinion, YMMV: the Senns have less bass but the overall sound spectrum is better, even on a lesser quality source. I just listened to both thru my Audigy headphone jack and I still think this is true.

EDIT: really crappy MP3s sound better thru the DT770s because some of the harshness is concealed. CDs are better IMO thru the Senns.

with a reasonable amp the 770's are the go for electronic - I hav em connected to a creek obh11. I listen to ALOT of electronic music ranging from ambient, goa/psy and the likes all the way to power electronics and industrial/hardcore.

I love the way it all sounds through my 770's.

Thanks. That's what I thought.. I think I need a pair of these suckers. What's the deal with the differing versions? Isn't there a 250 ohm one, a Pro version or...

PS: I imagine you have a helluva lot easier time finding Bloody Fist records than I do, since you live in Australia and all...

atm i think there's only the one version (250ohm) - they used to be 600ohm but i think those have long since been superceded. From what i've gathered there's now a "non-pro" version. dunno what the deal is with that.

As to getting BF records. it's not noticablely easier, unless i moved to sydney - BPM records there stock alot of great hardcore and the like. It is pretty easy to get into contact with Mark N for ordering and the like though. (he also does group buys and the like from sound base and underground music so it's pretty handy)

Have you been checking some of the **** that's coming out of Aussieland lately? Like Epsilon - Dirty Bomb. Awesome BF-styled jungle (a little too soft to be called break/hardcore but good nonetheless). DJ Zeitgeist's "You Are Dead" mix is also pretty good, but is really ****ing lo-fi.

Have you heard any of the BF livesets (on tape)? I'd like to order the Nasenbluten, Syndicate, and Overcast ones... but I bet they're ****ing ****ty quality. Hrm... perhaps I'll order from Bloody Fist direct.....

Unfortunately I haven't heard much in the way of HC/Jungle stuff from here of late. though i gotta admit i've been listening to more odd broken beat stuff like Black Lung..

i've not had a chance to hear the many livesets - cept for one i dug up a while back as a ****ty 16kbit rm.. ugh.. horrible quality.. also one they broadcast live on the radio..

I might be able to get a hold of a couple of BF and Mark N sets.. have to rememer to ask about it..

PS feel free to PM or ICQ me.. we're sorta straying a bit here

[/QUOTE]The Mark N mixtape I have is wretched. He lets each track run for like 5 minutes per track, a capital crime in the world of mixtapes IMO, and overall it's just boring hardcore. I was hoping for a lot more.

Hrm, perhaps we should take this to PM.
