Are desktop amps by and large better than portable units?

An evil product indeed. Would love to know how does ti compares with the Benchmark DAC1 ...

I found the Benchmark to be slightly dry for my tastes. I was very impressed by the new HR Desktop. It has the Home amp module and a modified version of the desktop DAC. Of course for $1k you could grab the Micro DAC at $299 and snag a very nice desktop amp from somewhere else for under $700... too many choices!

I already own a MicroDAC. They improved the DAC or it's the same as the MicroDAC ... ?

They say it's a slightly modified version of their Desktop DAC. I've never heard the Micro DAC so I have no idea what the sonic differences are.

Neat, but still a technically a hybrid, and tube rolling (aka half the fun) is out of the question.

It's only as expensive as you make it, Just keep in mind........it's about the music. Also, buying used equipment can save you a bundle.
