Are D2000 and D5000 the exact same cans?

Ok so I'm planning to buy the D2000 to get them Darthed and recabled with Jenalabs and I couldn't find any definite information that says that the D2000 and the D5000 are the exact same cans besides the cups and cable of course. So if I was to install D5000 cups and D5000 cable on the D2000 they would be indistinguishable structurally and sonically.

I was going to get the D5000 just to make sure but I wanted to seek the infinite knowledge of head-fi before I did anything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

George

They use the same drivers and i believe the size of the enclosures are the same except that the d2000's have some acoustic dampening pads inside the cups. Most people claim that a recabled D2000 is on par or surpasses the D5000.

What is your information source for these claims?

Same drivers, different cable and enclosure material, seems like wood makes more harm to D5000 acoustic due to unwanted resonance thus requiring some some extra dampening (markl mod).

I believe on the Markl mod thread, Markl himself discusses a lot of the differences in the 2 headphones since he does mods for both of them.

Seems like the general consensus is that the 2 don't sound the same, and I'm totally unsure if the 2000 can be modded into a 5000 though.

I've had both. a recabled D2K is at least on par with a stock D5000. drivers are the same - part numbers and all. housing is different - plastic with damping vs all wood.

Have you tried switching the cups to see if they fit?

The longer serial number on the rear of the drivers is identical, however, the shorter number below is different. Most people insist the drivers are "the same"; me, I don't know 100%.

The frame/headband assembly is identical.

The driver assembly is different. As mentioned the D2000 has posts that portrude with longer screws that poke through them to attach to the plastic cup. This means you can't put the wooden cups of the D5000 on the D2000.

The interior dimensions of the plastic and wooden cups is not the same. It's not just the enclosure material that makes a big difference (though it does), the shape and size of the interior space affects the sound as well.

Personally, FWIW, I vote for the D5000 as better sounding.

Thanks a lot for your input Mark, I've decided after much brain storming that if I can find a pair of D5000 with wrecked cups I'll get them otherwise it's a D2000. If I buy a brand new D5000 and mod them it'll cost me $200 more and they'll look the same.
