Are any of my headphones worth recabling? DT880/770 2005

Well, I'll get some new 'phones and my DAC/amp first, then work on the cables.

Thanks for the responses.

I'd say that's definitely a good way to spend your money. DT880/770 are great cans (from what I hear) but a better source/amp will make a way bigger difference than a fancy cable.

So you never spent time with them before they were recabled?

770 2005s are worth recabling, it helps a lot with their harshness. I posted a how-to a while ago, they're not that hard to recable really.

For the price of what some call a 'decent' rewire, you can actually but another really good set of phones which will provide a much more worthwhile change imo.

Change and improvement are two different things.

I tend to look at this stuff with a more value for money eye, maybe it's the cheapass in me

I just cringe when I see $300 + spent on a bit of wire when I feel that money would be much better spent elsewhere in a system, especially at the low-mid end. I see so much system imbalance cost-wise and pretty rarely are systems good enough to really benefit from a new wire over, say, a better source or phones or even better overall component matching. Many people seem to be more interested in looks/feel/whatever than the realities of proper system balance.

It's pretty rampant in here with setups that simply don't warrant that kind of cash on a cable when a lot of the rest is so mediocre. Better to optimize the whole system first, tweaks like cables after the foundation is optimal. It's often a very large investment and makes little sense until the core elements are in place.

That's my take anyway, of course people can and will do whatever they like, which is also cool with me. After all, we're here to have fun in whatever way that comes. I always end up recabling everything when I mod phones as the original no longer fits, but I generally use Mogami wire and Neutrik plugs so it doesn't cost much.
