First I was looking at 300 dollar CD players....

Then $600..

800...

1000....

and now...2000!!!!!

When will this madness end!

Is that monster worth its price?

My current setup is a SuperMini V2 amp (AD opamp), and Ety ER4S....are they worthy of such a CDP?

You'll likely want to upgrade amp and try other headphones later. The source is a good thing to upgrade next and I hear good things about the FMJ23. They sell occasionally on Audiogon too if you want to try to snag a used one.

Vertigo and Antness both have them and are quite pleased.

For its used price (usually a little over $1000), I'd say go for it. For its retail price, I'd want an audition first. Either way, it's a very good cdp, it's just a question of whether its sonic signature will work w/ your system.

DO like I did, look at Audiogon for one used. I picked mine up for $1200 from a guy locally. No shipping, no fuss, no muss. There alsways seems to be some for sale there for about $1300-1400, just be patient and wait for one at your price point!!

And yes, it is worth every single penny you will shell out!!! It sounds absolutely incredible!!!!!!!!!!

One thing is for sure, this player definitely increases the advantages of headphones over speakers, and personally I think it is a very smart buy for someone with a headphone system. It is also a cable rollers dream source.
I actually want one of these, but the two dealers I have checked within 80 miles of my house wants to rip me off. Knowing that I can get the SCD-1 for $400 more than what they are asking is a no brainer for me.

The CD 23T's (originally with the «T» for [CD] Text) predecessor reportedly is not exactly on the same level as the new model. So if you're looking for a used player, take care it has the CD text feature.

Arcam's web page lists the changes they made to the unit when they added the text reading feature. It should be better as they changed the motherboard and reduced the jitter even more, but I've never heard a distinct impression of an a/b comparison to verify that this already incredible CDP got any better. Anyone have any insights or articles that state this?? I read one off of a forum, but it didn't sound like the guy really did a good a/b comparison!!!

If you get it, you would SERIOUSLY need to upgrade your amp and interconnects and power cords and...

Czilla,

What Vert and Kelly are trying to tell you is that you're getting a very high quality source that the rest of your components might not be transparent enough for: in the end you'll find that they're veiling the signal and you'll want to upgrade your system -> remember that Vert ended up rehauling his entire rig after the Arcam graced it. So, unless you're ready to make that type of commitment, you may want to look at something less revealing and expensive (such as an AudioNote CD2.1) and invest the difference into an amp and different headphones. The Alpha 9 is very close to the CD23 (I a/b'd them when the CD23 first came out) but I've been told by collegues that the CD23t sounds noticeably clearer than its predecessor. I haven't heard a CD23t myself, only the version with the old transport (and I believe filters, going from the PMD100 to the PMD200 in the current units).

If you're set on getting a CD23 its worthy of its cost and hype, you'll be getting a fast, detailed, extended player that doesn't get in the way: I've known some people who thought it was bland at the first listen but came to appreciate that its just not emphasising any part of the chain and trying to impress. Its trully an effortless player, notes swing in time and redbook just doesn't get much better than what the Ring DAC lets through.

Also look at the Creek CD53, a player that gets bass lines a little fuller and has slightly more body than the Arcam (which you prefer more is a matter of taste, I prefer the CD23 but can see how others would like the CD53). The Arcam in turn sounds faster and has better transient response and in the end feels like its doing less to the signal.

For what its worth.
