In the 16th century they changed the New Year to January 1st from April 1st. Those who still celebrated on April 1st were deemed fools and others played tricks on them. Is the old New Year directly related to Pagans? I don't know.

just as a consequence of me being in school for the last 18 or so years. it feels like the year always starts for me around september.

Why should the start of Spring be the start of the New Year? I like 13 months per year (based on the moon).
