I'm just wondering if I can find an amp with the same sound signature/quality as the SR-71 in a lighter/smaller profile? The Hornet was a very nice amp, but much too compact in soundstage (made everything sound kinda flat!).

thanks for the help!

A Xin Super Macro/Miper Mini/Super Micro perhaps, if you op amp rolled it might work, or something like a Portaphile or a Micro amp from Headroom.

Only the SuperMini and SuperMicro could be considered truly smaller than the SR-71. The SuperMacro, Portaphile, and certainly the HeadRoom Micro are just as big.

I think most of the weight/size comes from the fact that the SR-71 uses 2 9v batteries. So you will have to look for an amp that uses 1 9v or AAA batteries most likely.

Whoa, that was a whole lotta info all at once! Are you telling me that all the Xin amps sound the same? is the Headroom micro amp that small (it looks kinda big in the picture). Maybe a portaphile, if it sounds as good as the SR-71...

A-ha. so only the Hornet and the smaller Xin's come in that kind of size, eh? Any impressions of the total airhead? is it smaller? Does the supermini sound as good as the SR-71?

Gvien that the op amps can be swaped/changed on the Xin amps, you wcould change the sound to get to fair approximation of what the SR71 should sound like specially if you incorporate the same op amp.

It is smaller, but "much smaller"? I had the V2^2 from Cesar on demo and I don't know. I don't think the difference is that meaningful, at least not enough for me to have to own both for the same purpose. But I guess if you need SR-71-like sound from another portable that would be the way to go. Cesar is good people.

ok, ok. This is great. First, thanks guys. Second, let's say i want a hornet sized amp as my size/weight limit more or less. Still go with the V2^2? The supermini? BTW, how would I configure the supermini (buffers/opampwise) to make it sound as close to the SR-71 as possible? Is Xin still taking forever to ship and not answering his emails? I sent him one last week re: the supermini and it's sound. I never heard back from him...

Well, I saw the picture of the Hornet next to SR-71/Portaphile and the Hornet was considerably smaller than either. So you can rule out the V2^2 IMO if you are limiting to the size of the Hornet.

I was under the impression that Xing's amp, despite the opamp rolling feature tended to sound different from the SR-71.. though I've only read the descriptions.
