I have an Antec Trio, but I'm not happy with its noise levels. I'm wary of modding a psu, so I'm thinking of replacing it with a PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 or Quad Corsair CMPSU-620HX. Is anyone using one of these? Are they silent?
Thanks.

pcp&c one is very loud as it's a real 750W supply and so will have to dissipate upto 150W of heat assuming 80% effeciancy. Currently I use a tagen 330W psu and have a relativity high end computer (x1950pro etc). 400W+ is just excessive.

I'm running a c2d e6400, a 8800 gts and a water pump. I had an nMediaPC 400 watt psu but it didn't like the 8800, it started squealing, so I went to the 650 Antec

the silencer and the corsair are both loud power supplies.

The enermax infiniti series is a quiet power supply, and uses all japanese capacitors. Silverstone also makes high quality quiet power supplies.

But the easiest is just mod the powersupply with a better fan and a switch.

Wired mine with a 120mm 117cfm fan, and then to a switch.

Run it at 5v for common stuff and its silent, then switch it to 12v when gaming, and cant hear it with my beyers on.

Cheapest easiest thing to do.

Easy might be a relative term. Do you know of any good psu mod guides? I've seen the 'swap the fan' tutorial, but this is the first I've heard of switching the voltage, which seems like a very good idea, but beyond my skillset.

Have you tried getting a seasonic power supply? They specialize in making whisper quiet ps. Check out www.silentpcreview.com. These guys are as passionate about their noise level as we are about out sq.

Guides? I don't think so, but I also haven't looked.

Its not too difficult of a mod if you know just a bit. And doesn't require soldering.

It's pretty much just cutting the fan leads, connecting the ground to ground, the power to a to a single pole double throw switch, and then wire 12v and 5v from the psu to the switch.

If you read about the Corsair there, you will find that its made by Seasonic, and is both cheaper and quieter - I think its their top recommendation right now. I just bought a 520hx a couple months ago and its very quiet and I think it was worth it the $80, although a few more connections would have been nice

The pcp&c are also highly recommended but I have no experience with them. My friend has 4 of them running and he won't buy anything else

spcr is what led me to the corsair. I came here looking for opinions from people I know are as loony about sound waves as I am. One man's slient pc is another man's lawnmower.

Silent PC Review is a great source of info about silent PC components and they generally recommend Seasonic PSUs.

Personally, I'm using an Antec TruePower II PSU - it is not the quietest and runs at 40C regardless of ambient temperature. I built a PC for my gf with a Cooler Master PSU that can with the case, and that one is actually cooler (unscientifically, the exhaust is much cooler than my Antec) and seems to be quieter too.

the corsairs are silent. I use corsair hx in my build. This is in the top best for the price range.

the PC Power & Cooling Silencer series is actually pretty quiet. I have a silencer 610 and it's a great psu. I replaced a Seasonic S12 600 with it. the silencer 610 is only slightly louder than the seasonic was, but I wanted something with a single rail.

I know I might get flamed for saying this, but stability and reliability is more important than noise. I know having a quiet PC is very, very important to some and I agree to a point. But the PSU is the most important component in a PC because it affects the performance of every other component. I cringe when i see people put good components and then skimp on the psu. So, even though some psus have been suggested here as being quiet there are really only two that I could recommend.

1. Seasonic S12 or M12 series. These are very, very stable, reliable and quiet PSUs. The Seasonic S12 600 was the best psu as well as one of the quietest about a year-year and a half ago.
2. PC Power & Cooling silencer series. Very stable and reliable. I would say medium-quiet loudness.

I also have the silencer 610, and I don't find it to be all that loud. I'll check with my radio shack spl meter later if you want, but it's decently quiet. Next to my file server it's inaudible

That's a good thread which gives you a list of good power supplies. You can also search that forum for any fan mods you're trying to do.

Try saying that when you're running a quad core and 8800 series gpu.
