I have borrowed the 660 from a friend last week. Yes it needs amp
I never heard DT-770 but compared to my ath M-50 it's brighter, more engaging, staging a bit more congested, quite detailed, tighter bass, but can be uncomfortable if you wear glasses and have large ears..

Have hd660's, hd330, hd680. All really good for the monies. Coming from akg k271 mkii's (given away as present), akg k681, and old akg k141 studios which died after many resolderings. Like the hd660's best, prbly better than the akg k270 mkii's...but all of them need amp/dac. For mobile purposes, superlux hd 681, but semi-open, my replacement for the akg k141's. All need burn-in of course. But for the monies..wow amazing! Haven't a/b next to the Beyer dt770's, but for 1/4 the price, very very close to a lot of sennheiser, akg etc cans! BUT you need good source (e.g. Tidal etc) and DAC and amp as well...so far not disappointed, but not an audiophile. Would say competing very closely with all of previously mentioned..
Edit: running my cans at home through asus phoebus or m-audio black box, on the road galaxy s5 and fiio q1 via uapp (which gives more than enough juice! fantastic little box!).
