I see he does a mod on the D7000's - the price is around $150...anyone do it? Does it deliver anything extra?

I did half the mod. damped the cups and driver and stuffed the earpads. Headstage was the best improvement, followed by a tightened bass and impoved dynamics. I think it was a worthwhile improvement.

Any loss in overall bass?

I havent experienced any loss of bass. Still plenty of bass just a bit more controlled, a little less resonance of the headphone cups. It actually increased the punch in the bass area. The sound is better balanced, bass doesnt bleed into the midrange and it makes it alot easier to tell when you are listening to compressed music vs uncompressed. Ive had to start updating my library with more cds.

also the dynamat adds a little more isolation damping some of the outside noise. If you have Markl mod them he uses lighter treatment for d7000 as i understand it. I did the mod myself and it took about 4 hr. It was kinda fun to get inside the headphone and see what was there.

I don't have the D7000 as I only have the D2000 but the mod is definitely a worthwhile improvement. It helps to tighten the 'farty' Denon bass and brings balance back to the overall sound. I prefer the sound of the half-markl mod though compared to full mod as the latter sucks out too much bass and sounds too bright to my ears at least.
