when i first saw the original aluminium grado sr325, i thought somebody'd just got a coke can and halved it and stuck each end to a headband.

I assume they are called cans because they vaguely resemble aluminum cans. Put two tuna cans on the side of your head to see what I mean.

Don't know if it's connected, but I'm reminded of that old trick of connecting two tin cans with a piece of string, to make a rudimentary telephone...
