i'm thinking about upgrading to a new 160gb ipod classic, but i've read that they skip and have other problems. just wanted to know how many people here have actually had these problems with their new ipod's.

i know there's already a thread on the new ipod's, but this one's just for people that are having problems with 'em.

I think the sound is a bit better than my 5G. no skipping - I think the major complaint seems to be that the cover flow and menu is sluggish with a large collection - I find the menu a little sluggish but not a big deal - I think the firmware update helped a bit - I'm sure any of these problems are firmware fixable.

I've had mine since Friday before last. The menus were a little sluggish before the update (and still now in some cases) and I don't like some of the default behavior such as the new screensaver but I wouldn't really call those problems. Overall it's been working well. Not had any skipping at all but I haven't been running it with EQ applied and all the reports I've seen indicate it is EQ related.

I have the 160GB version and it skips during songs...i'd say once during a song about 75% of the time. It pauses for a few seconds then starts playing again.

I find the screen saver to be very annoying because I like to see what song is playing without turning the thing on. who needs a big triangle suggesting it's playing with a giant time stamp? I don't.

I also don't like the split screen setup. i don't want album art. i have way too many albums to go through like that. a way to disable the split screen or numerous question marks i see because i didn't upload the album art? not that i've seen.

it also lags when selecting songs or moving through the menus.

by the way, i have the current update.

basically, i'm pretty disappointed. i'm going to try returning it but I have to deal with the typical policy of 15% restocking fee and it's opened so who knows....

very frustrating to spend 380 dollars and get a half-assed product that may be great soon or never, but i'm not the patient type to wait for them to update their faulty device...

I love mine. First DAP to actually get me thinking about selling my iMod. I think what we have (which is typical with new electronics) is that some are getting slightly defective products. It does not make it right and they should def. return them- but if you get one that is working the way apple hopes- its a very nice player. I have all 140GB filled and it is slightly slow but not at all bad. I found my 5.5 GEN was slower when I added cover art- to the point where I actually checked off the "add album art." The 6 gen is faster sifting thru IMO>

Been using mine since Friday. No issues. Updating to the 1.0.1 firmware made Cover Scan (or whatever it's called) faster, but I don't use it anyway - I prefer to go Genre->Artist->Album myself, since trying to sort through 2,000+ albums by cover art just doesn't work. Not a single skip yet.

Do you use apple lossless music? the vast majority of my music is lossless.

i've not used it enough to tell if it's only skipping on the lossless stuff yet but will start playing only those and then going to 320kbps to see...

Majority of mine is apple lossless. Again, no issues with it.

So I'm supposed to return it? Seems i'm not the only one...

I do not relish the idea of loading all 148GB of music all over again! Luckily i made sync'd playlist...

The two problems I've had with my Classic since I got are that iTunes freezes up regularly when the iPod is connected (but unfreezes after 40 seconds or so) and the minor problem that sometimes when I select an album, it begins playing from the second track instead of the first. Rebooting (Menu + Select) seems to cure this issue until the next time I sync. Luckily, rebooting the Classic seems to use a lot less battery than it did on the 5.5g

my 5g does this too. actually, pretty much anything i'm running when i plug my ipod in, freezes. but, yeah, it's only for like 10 seconds or so.

That has been exactly the same as my experience. And I am using 95%+ Apple Lossless.
