so i was just playing with my bro's D-777 with some 80 min CDRs i burned myself, and it seems not to like playing past what i estimate is the 74 minute mark. it would stutter for a few seconds, then lag behind with no sound, just a spinning disc. is this common with other older PCDP's?

I think it is, if I use an old player, I just burn 74's for "insurance" and the fact that that's mainly all I have helps

I have two D-777s and one of them is displaying this type of behavior. The other is not. In my player, I would say it makes it to the 76 minute mark without incident. Also, even with pressed CDs, all is not perfect. The last few seconds of the last track sometimes cuts off. Does the motor make loud noises, as if trying to get somewhere?

Also, I have a D-E805, DE-905, D-211, D-311, D-321, and D-515 none of which have any trouble playing 80 minute CDs to the end. So it is certainly not a characteristic of older players per se.

Very strange... ALL of my PCDPs will play 99 minute CDs with no problem (even the D5!

Could be a sign that the lasers focus is out?

Any remedy/solution to this?
Mine does that with CD's I buy, strangely only towards the end of the CD that it starts acting up (1-2sec pauses).

When I had my D-777, there was a something on the actual worm gear blocking the ability of the player to track to the outside of a long disk. Minor surgery (removing the physical obstruction, followed by lubrication) cured the problem.

Is this procedure DIY able?
Is there any illustration/instruction on how to go about?

Thanks

the best way to do it is to pick away at anything you can see on the outer end of the worm gear with a toothpick / whatever (non-metal I guess)

Then if you smear a tiny amount of lithium grease on the worm gear with a spatula, and then insert a full length CD, and then several times use track access from track one to the final track and back again... this should allow an even amount of that grease to be applied, and then fingers crossed... problem solved

so i was listening to my D-777 a few minutes ago through my D66 eggos, and everything sounds great. nice sounstage, crisp highs, nice bass extension without any bloatiness; thoroughly enjoyable. then i tried the ESP circuit, and all hell breaks loose! the music is full of static and the treble is full of sibilants. after a minute or so, i had to switch it off, it became unbearable!

i don't remember my D-321 being this bad when i had the ESP on, but i can't confirm this either cos it's been years since my D-321 is functional. i think when it comes to a compromise between skip protection and sound quality, i'll stick to my D-EJ915. it won't match the D-777's amazing sound quality with the ESP off, but the D-777 with the ESP on is just excrutiating.

cheers.

I got mine from eBay and does not have the ESP issue. Just a thought, wouldn't it be nice if we have a resident PCDP doctor where we can send our sick toys for a once over?!

i just tried my brother's D-777 and it has the same ESP issue. i know ESP degrades the sound quality, but the difference is like night and day. hopefully this isn't the case for all D-777s. Mat Bon 0013, i'm glad your D-777 doesn't have this problem. any other D-777 owners have this same ESP issue?

I have not noticed any problem w/ my ESP. It does degrade the sound, but not too much. I have not had a problem w/ 80 min. CDs either. My issue is that the door hinge got stuck, and I busted it closing the top. Luckily it stills plays music, but I would like to fix it somehow.
