I originally bought the game many years ago to run on my PI 133 and it was awesome. It ran better on my PII 350, and now I still play it on my PIIII 2.4. I like how scalable TA is. You can have up to 10 teams in any order of multiple alliances, up to 5000 units/buildings each, and huge maps. The more ram and cpu power you got, the more action.

There used to be, and still are thousands of 3rd party units and maps too (gotta love those starwars and mechwarrior units). Always liked it better than games like StarCraft, because the physics are just more realistic. Micro management is great too - sometimes I'll lock on to a jet fighter and manually steer it around with mouse clicks.

Unit management is designed pretty well. You can highlight a ton of units, and you can even queue an infinite amount and combination of attack/build/move/etc. orders. I let a skirmish game run for a few hours on it's own once, and my base was intact and maintained when I got back! =)

At times things can get excessive and strategy flies out the window though - I'll select 100 fighters and bombers and have them run a suicide mission after the enemy commander, or have a Krogoth casually walk through an enemy base and wipe it clean.

robots, wheeled vehicles, planes, and water (naval units are my personal fav) - what more could you want? You can probably buy the game and it's worthwhile expansion "Core Contingency" for very cheap now (no cd key required), and I highly recommend it. Get it now

I used to play a lot of RTS games in the late 90s. In that day, Total Annihilation rose head and shoulders above the competition, especially with the expansion pack. I'm kind of out of the loop now, but I haven't seen anything else that comes close. The game is balanced with a lot of variety and easily customizable. Core is better than Arm though

I used to play this game over the modem with my friend for hours every night. It is definitely in my list of top computer games ever, along with Star Control 2 and Master of Orion 2. Besides, the soundtrack is pretty good

Although the single player game is mediocre, the multiplayer is absolutely stellar. Too bad the sequel was bad and Cavedog went under.

I would usually play with nukes disabled. We also created a few of our own units and tweaked the existing ones. It was a great idea for Cavedog to release new units online every week or so.

Definitely still the top of RTS imo too. TA is now just a hidden gem listed in Atari's archive site.

I liked RedAlert 1/2 also, but they can't run on my XP. Any tips? I heard rumors too, but a quick google search for "T-- A-- 2" yieled sites with info. like this:

"Phantagram, the Korean game developer that created Kingdom Under Fire, has confirmed that it is working on a sequel to Total Annihilation, the award-winning 3D real-time strategy game created by Chris Taylor and Cavedog Entertainment. The new game is scheduled for release in the fourth quarter of 2004."

Hmm..

Heheh, Q4 2004 has come and gone. Hopefully they have something to show at E3 2006.
