Right then, I'm a Godspeed lover. It can't be helped, I just love it. I've got all their albums as well as all of Silver mt Zion's too and some Sigur Ros. I thought I'd ask you on what has a similar sound to Godspeed and co?

"Dirty Three" has a Godspeed vibe in the mix. "Explosions In The Sky" reminds me of Godspeed/A Silver Mt. Zion too. The new Broken Social Scene album, which has some Godspeed alums involved, does not sound like Godspeed but there are subtle elements of Godspeed in their music...

I used to listen to Mogwai -- aren't they in the same ballpark as GYBE?

What about the other Godspeed spin offs like "Set Fire to flames"?

I'll have to look up "Dirty Three" and "Broken Social scene".

Yeah, agree with the Dirty Three. Very nice, albeit also very melancholy and driven by an extremely talented violinist, so keep that in mind. I'd go with Ocean Songs myself. Some other favorites that I don't think have been mentioned yet ...

Cul de Sac - Crashes to Light, Minutes to its Fall (I've talked about this one quite a bit here)
The Appleseed Cast - Low Level Owl: Volume 1 (doesn't follow the same soft-loud-soft "formula" as Mogwai and GYBE, but similar goals and it works very well)
Tortoise - Millions Now Living Will Never Die (Djed - a classic)
Kinski - Be Gentle with the Warm Turtle (I like the last one a lot too, Airs Above Your Station, kind of a Sonic Youth meets Brain Eno sound)
Hash Jar Tempo - Under Glass (:-))
Rachel's - The Sea and the Bells (neo-classical at heart, but one of the most brilliant, refreshing albums to come out of the mid 90s post-rock scene. 17 musicians and 23 instruments, including contrabass, viola and bass clarinet, have here been drafted to perform and record this gorgeous, sprawling epic - required listening)
Spiritualized - Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space (essential modern space rock)
Voyager One - Monster Zero (MBV meet Echo & The Bunnymen)

According to All Music guide, the follwoing bands are similar to Mogwai:
Experimental Audio Research
Rome
Tortoise
Broadcast
Bowery Electric
Godspeed You Black Emperor!
Quickspace
Bedhead
Fridge
Bardo Pond
Movietone
Flying Saucer Attack
The Third Eye Foundation
Hood
Arab Strap
Surgeon
Füxa
Character
Seaworthy
Ulan Bator

Of this list (some of which have already been mentioned), I think Bowery Electric, Bedhead, Flying Saucer Attack, and Ulan Bator fit the slow-fast-slow and/or melancholy of GYBE so some extent. Bardo Pond is cool, but they are pretty sludgy.

Jumpin' a few years and genres - Henryk Gorecki...I think its his 3rd Symphony esp. that blows me away. The first movement is pretty subtle and starts to grow and ebb with the entrance of a beautifull operatic singer. The last half is up there with the best GY!BE moments of grandeur and sadness.
Also, moments of John Fahey, Six Organs of Admittance, and the Swans.

He doesn't really sound like them, but you should take the plunge into Ambient land.
