I'm currently in the process of backing up my computer and getting it ready to upgrade to Windows 7 32bit Ultimate from currently Vista Ultimate. Anything I should be aware of or need to do before doing the upgrade? Any reasons not to do it yet? Most reviews I've read have been positive but I'm wondering if I've missed anything.

Lastly, what tweaks or programs should I install once I get it running?

I would, but not as upgrade from vista via the win7 CD. But I would go for a clean install.

by upgrade, i mean as apposed to clean install

before you upgrade i suggest downloading video, audio, etc drivers for all your components, put them on a cd or thumb drive, and then upgrade.

Do a fresh install fully wipe your vista hard drive, format it within ultimate install. Also use 64bit if you can.

you could, [as ive done], split the main hdd into two, put 7 on one partion, with vista left on the other, get 7 running and all ok [ie leave it a few weeks with vista still on, and if you are sure 7s right, delete the vista partion after moving files etc over

i have the option of 64 or 32, with 4gb ram, but because of compatibility, have stuck with 32

Problem with that may have bootloader on vista partion. It's safer to have one OS per hard drive.

Lazerboy2000: definitely go with 7.

The only reason not to go with 64 bit is if you have an older CPU that does not support 64 bit instructions or you have less than 4 GB of RAM. If you meet both requirements, you really should go with 64 bit.

^ what about program compatibility? alot dont work with 7, thats why i didnt put the 64bit disc in

Usually what works with Vista will work with 7. What programs specifically do you worry about?

Huh? I've yet to run into anything that didn't work. And 32-bit programs run on 64-bit installs; that's not a compatibility issue either. Quote:

Why?

And the Vista->7 upgrade is surprisingly smooth and painless. I've done it 3 times without issue. Just be sure you run the Upgrade Advisor beforehand and do what it tells you to.
