Any reason why Sony decided to sell the SA5000 for 700.00 retail?

They do things extremely well, but have a few too many glaring faults to sound like a 700.00 can.. & , yes, I know you can buy them used for much less.. Especially when the 650 retail for 550.00 & the 701 for 450.00..

Eh the w5000 is extremely flawed as well as a 750 dollar headphone. I don't think anything in the over 300 under 1000 dollar price is particularly worth their MSRP with the possible exception of whatever random in production electrostats (But then the value is subjective to how much you are willing to put in the amp which needs to be a lot)/the JVC DX-1000 and I guess maybe the Denons though I am not a fan of them myself.

The difference is, you can't get the W5000 for 300 like the SA5000.. I would try a pair for that price!

Everybody's doing it. Name one high-end headphone maker who doesn't inflate their flagship's MSRP.

SA5000 is hardly their flagship headphone

The MSRP is a rather weird number though with these headphones. I've always just explained it by saying it's because they're made by Sony. I should go to one of the Sony stores here and ask how much they'd want for the SA5000 new. I bet it would be something ridiculous like $1000 here in Canada.
