With the amazon deal going on right now, and all 3 beyerdynamic models being cheap, and without the ability to listen to them beforehand, is there any reason why one would get 770s or 880s instead of the 990s? Lots of eletronic music, but a fair amount of other things too (progressive/classic rock/alternative). Currently have grados sr225s and am looking for better bass and resolution.

This deal might cause me to get 990s over senn hd650s.

I've been thinking about getting the 770s for a bit now, even more now since they went from about $140 to $127 on amazon.

I'll probably get the 770s, price and closed are my reasons not to get the other models.

770 is indeed very bass-focused - I find it rather overpowering for most of the music. However, they're generally easy to drive off of ipod and other DAPs and do not require an amp (except for higher impedance models)

880 is very neutral pair of cans, with good soundstage and focus on detail. I personally preferred combination of good tube amp and DT880 '03. They can be seen as being little cold and analytical, and they have very, very slight emphasis on treble (03 model was little more neutral than 05 model ime)

I've only heard DT990 briefly, and they had some weird sonic signature that I didn't like - I'm generally insensitive to siblence, but those were unbearable. I heard that 600ohm version is a big improvement over regular model (250ohms, if I'm not mistaken).

all three have distinctly different sonic signature, and DT880 '03 is my favorite out of three. It's also the most all-rounder out of three - doing good job with rock, pop, trance, and classical fairly well.

Oh, and guys - lets keep it civil.

and recommending gear that you never heard is a no-no.

Rubbish. The DT770 is more bass shy then bass heavy, and it's treble focused.
I'm talking about the DT770 premium line consumer edition 2005.
Maybe you are referring to the DT770 pro, because they are indeed bass focused.
But I think it's strange to talk about the DT880 and DT990 consumer editions, and compare them to a DT770 pro version.

Yes, let's all make dumb accusations based on nothing.
