Seeking to replace my senn 497. Using the cans for computer and portables. Just wondering if there are other choices other then the 7506, 250/80 and HD280 pro.

Listen to alotta dance music so Im gonna need something really thumping, well at least more thumping than my 497s.

Koss KSC-35 ought to thump pretty well, if you can find them.

That's the low-end solution. A somewhat higher-end solution would probably be Beyer 770 and Sony MDR-V6.

I'm going to be trying out some DT770's in the near future, based on all the hype and talk about them recently. It would be nice to cozy up with them for some hard beats or for just rockin' out. What with their supposed super-duper-hoopa-hoopa fun factor and absolutely slammin' bass response. They are 250 ohms impedance (or 600, but you'll probably want the 250 version)... so they are not the easiest to drive. Maybe hook yourself up with a portable amp to go along with it?

GanChan's recommendations are solid. If you have a discman with a lineout and can afford the beyer's and a portable amp, go for it.

The V6's/7506's are pretty solid too.

the porta pro is absolutly not an upgrade from a HD497, far away. Even if it has a bit more bass, the quality of the bass isn't the same. and it offers even less isolation (and it's not the strongest point of the 497s). But I must admit it's real bang for the bucks at 25$ + shipping.

I missed the part about isolation....I thought the main criterion was thumpier bass. I myself would prefer the 497 to the Porta-Pro, but my tastes don't favor bass anyway.

The portapros (and other varients) are not that pleasant to listen to. Neither is the V6, though it's pretty great for the price, especially out of soft sounding equipment. The Ixos dj1001 and Denon 950 are definitely worthy headphones, though. If you don't need closed cans, then the Grados are also worth checking out. If you want a high impedence headphone and a portable amp, check out the Red Sound and Samson amps for around $60 at online dj stores.

i'd say the V6/7506s are the best bang-for-the-buck. they're the fps2000s of comp speakers i tell ya

and if you want bass, i think you'd be pretty happy too. the beyers cost 2X as much where we're at man. so do the senns!

I love my Beyer 770 Pro. Though it might be alittle too much for you.

If you need a can with decent sound isolation, consider HFI-650 if you have a chance to hear them. Supposedly it has a sound isolation on par with HD280 Pro.

I'm getting a pair and will post my comments compared to HD600 and SR60 when I've properly acclimatized them.

The Sennheiser HD202's are closed and they thump quite alot -- more than the 497's, too much really. Apparently the HD212's are also quite thumpy. (By "thump", I mean an exxagerated mid-bass response that actually can sound like 'thump, thump, thump...' on some recordings.)

I just got the 7506's myself. They don't thump as much as the 202's, but they do have a really satisfying, deep bass response that the 497's and 202's only hint at. I was surprise, however, that on some recordings that I'd considered to have a "big bass" kind of sound that there wasn't much difference from the 497's. On other recordings with, say, a MOR rock sound, they revealed bass instrumentation at low frequencies that I'd never heard before and opened up a new dimension of the music for me.
