I like the 3030 a lot, by the way, and from what I gather most of the negative comments made around here would be more accurately assigned to source components.

What is the improvement like from 202 to 303 and 303 to 404? Is it really a big improvement? I don't want to spend too much if I don't have to. If it's something like from the 580s to the 600s then I personally don't think it's worth it.

202 compared to 303 has a sharp high and low frequency rolloff. In my view, the 202 is not worth considering if you're going to get Stax.

The 303 is very good but from my memory (didn't get to AB compare), the 404 seems to have an overall smoother character and more full bass.

The differences are more pronounced than with the HD580/600 though they all have similar characteristics (tonally neutral, accurate timbre, high resolution, quick transients, no visceral bass).

I would strive to get at least the 303. Get the 404 if it suits your budget. Get the 007 if you don't have a spouse or mortgage payment.

Gah backatcha! Less mystery now.
Hey, work moved to a "new, bigger, improved facility"---which has an industrial strength vibrator disguised as an air conditioning unit on the roof, so the LF noise and rumble made the highend stuff useless there. Was putting up with Senn 451 NCs, which, er, are a bit of a letdown in comparison. The good news is I will be mostly telecommuting from the comfort of home, so the 3030 will again be enjoyed. Very comfy for long listening sessions.

Second the motion regarding the 303/404, go for at least the 303, and the 404 if affordable. The 404 has a better cord, with greater conductor separation...not just slightly lower capacitance to drive, but less dynamic interaction.
