I've never looked much into modding at all, mostly out of fear, but I have a pair of AKG k272 HD that I really like apart from having no bass whatsoever. I've noticed however that when I push the cups hard against my head, the bass which typically just kind of tucks itself away out of existence, comes out and the cans sound really great. Maybe I'm overestimating the potential of mods, but do you all have any recommendations on anything I could do to pull out that bass? I'm reminded of an extensive mod I saw that was supposed to soften a pair of Grados, but the problem with the AKGs isn't that they're harsh, it's simply that while the bass is there in the driver somewhere , it simply won't come out unless you drill the cups to your skull. :p

Any ideas, or am I just going to have to look for new cans?

Judging by this photo, I would try some felt rings inder the earpads.  They should be large enough to cover the baffle beyond the white filter.  Avoid covering up the filter and any holes and what not.
If that is a some tuning foam of sorts that I see sticking out of the earpad in that photo, you could try replacing that foam with thicker foam (make sure that density is similar).  That could affect the sound negatively for all I know, but it is at least reversible.

Covering up the hole in the inner side of the earpads would benefit the sound a pinch.  I don't think that they need the hole when they are velours to begin with.

You could also try bending the headband carefully for a tighter grip.

thanks for the info... i'll look into that soon. I actually just took off the ear pads and left the cover over the driver and am wearing them without the ear pads, and the bass is somewhat more noticeable.
