It looks like Hurricane Dean will be a close call for a direct hit. The center might pass to the South. Either way, big trouble for large population in Kingston.

Check out the NOAA page for imagery, look at GOES Atlantic floater 1.

We're keeping our fingers crossed for all our friends on the island for sure.

We had four major hurricanes pass close by our house in '04, my vinyl collection was flooded and destroyed, so we have a small idea of what they're facing at the moment. Others around here lost major portions of their homes. Some were never rebuilt. These storms are not something to be underestimated.

Wmcmanus lives in the Caymans. I just sent him a pm to see if he stuck around or headed for the US. I'm not sure they've recovered from the last one that hit there.

I pm'ed him yesterday sending him my good wishes and hope that it's not too bad. He hasn't responded so I figure that he's too busy preparing for Dean. I hope that it isn't that bad for the Caymans, but it looks like it's going to be.

I think you are probably right. Getting prepared for a hurricane is not fun. I was glad when it wasn't coming our way since I just got my new roof installed that was damgaed in Hurricane Wilma.

I wasn't even thinking about where Dean was headed after it passes Jamaica. I'm guessing that Wayne lives on Grand Cayman which is more in the path than the other islands...the larger island with Hurricane warning included in the projected path, from what mrarroyo posted.

I heard back from Wayne yesterday. He was in Illinois heading for Florida with his Atom in tow. Once there he'll head for Grand Cayman to check things out.

It looks like the Caymans were fortunate. They caught only a glancing blow from Dean instead of having the center go directly over. Now I send my hope to Belize and the Yucata where it's supposed to hit land next.

Last week my state was getting a bit of a scare, from hurricane Flossie, fortunately the worst thing we received here on Oahu was slightly stronger than normal winds, Big Island, from what I here did recieve alot of rain though.
So what I'm trying to say is that, I sure hope everyone is ok down there in Caribbean.

Thank God. What sort of preparations does one usually make? Surely people around those susceptible areas have more sturdy, "hurricane-proof" houses? Excuse my ignorance for I live in the land of concrete forests.
