Any HD800 owners go back to AKG K701/2?

I appreciate your comment and opinion, but you have not heard the Q701. Your post is just based on speculation and what appears to be bias against AKG. Many, many people on Head-Fi tend to post opinions and make statements, both pro and con, on products they have never heard.  Everyone has that right, but I would hope that most people would give more weight to someone's opinion who has personal experience with the item being discussed. If you heard them and trashed them, that I can understand. Everyone hears things the way they hear them. Everyone has certain sound signatures they prefer over others. But just speculating and trashing things seems silly to me.

What are the differences you're hearing?

I dont dislike AKG i have owned a lot of their headphones and currently own 2. I do however have a severe bias against Harman.

I guess only time will tell if it is more than the green colour scheme causing the different sound. (FR graphs ftw)

Does seem unlikely they changed much. even more so that they objectively improved them.

If the folks at AKG changed anything besides cosmetic changes, why would they hide it? makes no sense to me. Not discounting what macbob713 hears, but there could be some other possible explanation I suppose...can't think what at the moment.

These aren't my graphs.  I forgot the site I got them from, but they are done by the same person.  [It was a Japanese site, I'm sure somebody know it's name.  It's been mentioned here before].

...and that's why graphs don't always mean much...

The vertical axis is just too compressed to accurately judge differences by eye.

Now I had a hearing session with my K501 and a test-sample CD from stereoplay - Therese Juel, Chuck Mangione, Charlie Antolini, Marienne Mellnas, Jazz At The Pawnshop, Modest Mussorgsky (2008 High End, the best of 30 years) - near perfect. Next time I will compair with my Q701 and D7000.

That's odd, because I'm convinced my K501s have more bass and less treble than the K701. Maybe the differences between K501 versions are quite large. I have a middle production V1, it seems.

What I'm finding is that the K501 seems to have more bass on some songs but not others than the K701.  It's different on a per song basis.  No clue why.  Different beasts?

May you have the bass heavy version?  V3, the last reversion produced before discontinuation.

I definitely have the middle production - three holes in the inside, four on the outside. I think teh K701 might have a little more *impact* in the bass than the K501, but the amount is not there. The treble amount also drowns out the bass and mids on the K701, whereas with the K501 everything is perfectly balanced for my tastes.

But if V3 has the most bass... a long time ago (5-6 years), before I had any experience with headphones (just my SR60s) I listened to Mrvile's V3 K501. I remember them being very bass-shy, at least compared to the Grados - on par with the AD700s. Mrvile himself says that he thought his K501 was very bass shy. Maybe I'm just conditioned from all my months of K701 listening.

I got my K501 from an former AKG staff member - on the box 2458Z0005, 1000 28 R8, 52606 (if it is the original box)
my K701 have 2458Z0016, 235 30 UN, 53519 (this is the original box)
I think the first number is the product number, the second the coded production date, the third the serial number

When the HD-800 owners go back to the K702, they should consider the SPL Phonitor amp as the one amp that will bring justice to K702. As well with the price of a new 800s you can get a used Phonitor and a new K702.
