Dave Holland, the bassist, released an album of solo cello called Life Cycle that might hit the spot. It's maybe pizzicato, but there are some nice arco passages as well ... depends on exactly what you're looking for, I guess. Also on ECM there are some albums by David Darling, but he uses a lot of effects and his music is closer to New Age IMHO.

You could try the Basquiat Strings; a string quartet plus bass and drums, led by the cellist Ben Davis.

Definitely Erik Friedlander. He's the son of the famed jazz photographer Lee Friedlander, and at this point he's played with folks from all spectrums of music (John Zorn, Alanis Morrisette, Dave Douglas, Joss Stone). He's constructed his latest disc, Block Ice and Propane, as an aurally expansive travelogue, steeped in Americana. I'd start there.

Yo-Yo Ma Plays Ennio Morricone is neither classical nor jazz, but you might like it.
