Hello,

I got a Sony R50 and its sound (headphone-out) is not bad. This unit changed my view on MD players. I got a Sharp MT-831 today. It sound (headphone out) very good even when playing a MD recorded by the R50. I am now buying Sony JAE20 ES MD deck for Type R format recording in the hope of producing better record.

The sharp MT-831 is really good. This aroused my interest in collecting more legendary MDP. I have heard very good comment on the Sharp ss323 but I can't find one. I can easily find a used SS301. Is the SS301 a good MDP with good sound? How about other Sharp models?

Hi,
I'm sure that the good comment on the SS-323 is from me. It seems like that I'm the only owner in this forum. The 323 is the japanese domestic model in 1999. It comes with ultra bright backlit LCD, DSPs, dancing dudes, and aluminum body with slot in loading system. The sound quality is very liquid and smooth. I love it. I also have Sony MZ-R50, and used to have the SS-301. The SS-301 to me is not a good buy due to U-toc problem. The sound quality is very powerful, but lack the good treble extension. The bass is very impressive, and most of the time too much. I also have the MT831, and it does sound good, but I would rate it lower than my SS323.

Sharps all sound good, but from my experience, older is better, unless you go for the newest (DR7 recorder, DS8 player), unless you go back to far and run into UTOC problems (pre-821).

haven't got much experience with Sharp's players though, since they only release recorders around here (or anywhere else outside Asia).

Hello,

Thank you for your response. I think I will not buy the ss301 and will search for a ss323. By the way, I got a 2nd hand but new in the box Kenwood Q77 MD player. Very good sound!! I think it is the modern MDP of choice if you don't need recording function. Extremely small, light weight with long battery life. Very good sound. I have yet to compare it with the MT-831. My impression is that it sound better than the 831. Digital amp is really a great thing for portable audio!
