I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on a DSLR and have basically settled on the Canon 30D. Was hoping to get light impressions from any users out there.

Any help is appreciated!

I had rounded it down between the following: Nikon D40x, D50, D80; Canon 350D, 400D, 20D and 30D.

Basically, the entry models are too small and lack basic top-view status LCDs, the D50 is impossible to find new now, and the D80's pricepoint is terrible, IMO. The 20D is still an option, but I'm unsure the savings would be enough to justify going without spot metering and other mild upgrades.

I'd go with the Nikon D200 in a heartbeat, but it's too pricey.

You can get the Nikon D200 refurbished from buydig for $1200. I would suggest getting the 20D. The 30D didnt seem too much of an improvement to me. Also in the case of a 40D announcement (i guess soon) the retail value of the 20D will decrease less than that of the 30D.

I have a XTi at the moment (actually trying to sell it, but that's because of college textbooks, not for lack of love towards it) and I have shot with a 30D before. If it is what you have decided, just get it - it's a wondeful camera to shoot with.

I just bought one last month but really haven't played around with it much at this point. It was an impulse buy, so I didn't really compare it to anything else. I liked the way it felt in my hands (although it's kind of heavy) and the fact the it does 5 fps which will be perfect for action shots. That was about the extent of my analysis, and in the meantime I've become busy with other things so I've yet to even browse through the user's manual to become aquainted with the various features. But I will, in due time.

Considering that the 30D is only a little over a year old, I highly doubt that the 40D will be announced soon. Since the 1Ds and 5D are older, I would think Canon would want to replace those before the 30D.

Buydig does have a pretty good price on the 20Ds. The 30D is a fine camera too...especially if you're wanting better AF and spot metering ability. IMO, the price points between them and the D200 are a good indicator of their capabilities. Considering their price brackets are different, it never seems that you're comparing apples to apples with Canon vs Nikon.

Never say never. The 30D replaced the 20D in 18 short months, and the Nikon D40x replaced the D40 in less than FOUR months!

I am completely disinterested in buying a camera online. In Canada, the prices are no better than at a B&M and I don't trust most of the places in the 'States that offer big enough savings to negate customs/taxes. I'll see what I can weasel outta B&H though, maybe.

[EDIT] and I'll say it again - if I could land a D200 with a lens while keeping to my budget ($1500CDN), I'd be buying it in a heartbeat.

1D mark III comes out this month, I believe.

It's a great camera, highly recommended.

Yeah, be really careful with camera buying online. Lots of places attempt to sell reallllly low quality lenses in packages with them, etc.

Then again, you probably already knew that, so I am making a pretty pointless post. Bah.

yes...it's already out now, so my conjecture is that the 1Ds is the next upgrade that Canon will whip out

Indeed. Sad part is, the standard Canon kit lens isn't much better. At least the Nikons get packaged with a quality lens. Black's has the 30D kit for $1400 though... not bad considering most places try to sell the body only for that amount.

I have both systems (Canon and Nikon). To be honest I would buy a Canon because of full frame and in case I will upgrade in FF in the future. However I have in the house a D200 that I bought for a friend and i feel that its a really nice camera ahead of my Canon 20D. If I were you I would look for a used 20D at a great price vs 30D new and save the money for a better lense.

But thats just me.

Oh I figured you were pluralizing 1D.

I'm assuming you're aware of the 1DsmkII.

The D40X is a seperate model, not meant to replace the D40.
As on the 30d....go get it! Awesome camera! Nice built and nice qual as well.
I don't have one but hold them often. Not much of a differ from the 20d though. Except bigger screen and stuff but most important..the 20d doesn't have spotmetering. The 30d has.
