I've been out of the DIY game for a long while, mostly selling off my vast collection of parts and stuff as my g/f moves in with me. I've also noticed that I spend a lot more time listening to my cans on my computer than I do my main system, or at least close to 50%. I just fixed my HD600s (huge upgrade over the Bey DT770-pros I was using).

I have built, quite successfully other equipment including a tube amp, preamps, etc. I studied the theory and practice for more than a decade. I want to use a lot of the parts I have on hand, but the OPTx appropriate I can buy or trade for. There is where I am a fuzzy when it comes to cans, I've always worked with speakers in mind and need to refresh my math of the necessary impedance and voltage swings for cans.

Has anyone built a phone amp using the 4P1L? what gain did you shoot for? what output Z did you aim for?

The Bottlehead Smash was a great pre-amp kit with 4P1L tubes.
As an alternative an amp with 2P29L driving 4P1L could be a good solution for headphones (planning on a build like this).
I thinks it's nice to have a all DHT for headphones!
There's only one 4P1L headphone amp commercially i know off.
