anthony lane, a film critic for the new yorker magazine, is known for his witty, often devistating movie reviews. this time, he reviews "the host", a south korean monster movie. not only did he love it, but he saw it twice, and plans to go back a third time. this to me is very high praise indeed.`

well it is a pretty obnoxious thing to come in here and write, but i didn't want to assume anything. if you do not like movie critics, then don't read them. and ken, i don't need an "expert" to tell me what i think of your snarky little comment. thumbs down, man.
"the host" i believe is the top grossing movie ever in s. korea, and it is just opening in a limited run in the states. if you check rottentomatoes.com, 75 out of 80 film critics gave it a good review. that is astonishing for a monster movie, almost unprecidented.
Anthony Lane is not an ordinary film critic. He's more of a writer and essayist, one who simply happens to find film to be a gleefully fun subject on which to unleash his pen.
If he is seeing The Host three times, I suspect it is more because it appeals to his well-developed sense of absurdity than because it is an excellent movie by more widely-accepted and conventional definitions of excellence. Not that he doesn't love excellent movies -- he clearly does -- but his review of The Host made me think that his enjoyment of it came more from the twinkle in his satirist's eye than from the calculations of his cold critic's heart.
I love Anthony Lane's writing, and based on his review I had been planning to see The Host anyway. If it amuses him so much that he has to see it three times, I'm sure I'm gonna love it.
well, head about it like 2 months ago and it's supposed to be really good. sdo yes, will probably see it eventually specially because I like asian cinema.

he makes his case clear for the film in his review--which is there really is no set bar for excellence in film anymore. if a slimy giant-tadpole movie can get a critic like lane's attention, i think we can throw out any percieved "standards" of what makes a good film.

You know, it's exactly this kind of "feeling" in reviews that I look for. I'm not one to take reviews of film or music seriously, but between the lines there is a lot to be read.
As an example, the Toronto Star is notorious for giving just about every movie that gets released an abyssmal rating. The reviewers are jaded and hateful in their choice of words and to be frank, seem to hate movies altogether. The Star may be a bad choice for making an example (none of them write particularly well), but in a lot of cases, you can determine whether they really did hate the movie or if their "critic side" was forcing them to write the "truth" while their moviegoer persona was truly entertained.

It's a foreign movie though....that gives it extra brownie points. The only American remake of Japanese horror movies I've seen is the Ring series. Even the ads for the Grudge don't make me want to go out and see them. I can think of many other things to pass 2 hours of my life
However, I'll more then likely see The Host. Not sure if it will be the movie theater or DVD. I like checking out Metacritic, which just scores movies after averaging lots of reviews. The Host got a score of 85....very good for Metacritic. Another movie that I want to see, Black Snake Moan, scored 53
