what i have is HD-497's
choice for open is down to HD-590. (comfortable, sounds good, easy to drive with no amp off a santa cruz)
but im considering getting closed headphones too.
im mainly looking for better sound and more comfort than what i have.. 280 pro's are highly recommended around here, so i might get those and save money. any other recomendations for phones that are primararily more comforable, and secondarily better sounding than HD-497's? closed OR open. and, i have no amp, but i might get one in a few years.

Looks like we're in the same boat here. I am close to getting the HD590s. I plan to use these mainly on my PC, I'm running with a Audigy 2 Platinum EX in this machine. My old card was a Santa Cruz, a very good card imo.

Anyways, the HD280PRO is another set of headphones I'm looking at. Closed and are assumed to have great sound. In my other thread, someone mentioned the Philips HD890s, which also look very good and can be easily run w/o an amp.

Soooo many choices, it makes it really hard to nail one particular one set down.

the ety er4 series always seem to get high marks for closed phones (canal phones). my current favorite closed phone is the sony cd1700, but it needs an amp to sound good.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again: if you plan on getting an amp sometime in the future, the HD590s are a good choice. If not, do not buy it. It just doesn't live up anywhere close to its potential without an amp.
Also, I truly hope you have auditioned it without an amp. Without an amp, they can be very...moody.

I'm kinda in the same boat as you too, jessica. Right now i'm most seriously considering the 280. You can find it online for $75, a far cry from the $170+ you'll probably have to shell out for the 590. They should also be decent without an amp, similar to the 590, but can also benefit from an amp later down the line. I figure if it's going to be years before I buy an amp, I might as well save up for some audio-technics a900 or a1000 at that time too.

After spending a bit of time with the Etys I definately have to say they have bass.

Here's the way I'd desribe it

Imagine you're at your favourite nightclub, music blasting away at unsafe levels, bass that rattles your teeth etc.

Now remove your entire body so only your ears are present - that's what the bass on the Etys is like.
It's audible, there's tons of it, but it's never going to rattle your teeth.

Moving along, have you considered any Beyers jessica00? The DT250-80 (closed) reviewed by Kelly recently would be one of my suggestions, or even the Beyer DT531 (open). Both are great for trance/dance/ambient etc, as well as being excellent all-rounders and easy enough to drive straight from a soundcard.

i question the comfort of the beyers.

Is that speaking from experience or speculation? Admittedly, if your head is sensitive to clamping, even the beyers might feel uncomfortable. But I'm pretty sure almost everyone here would agree with me that Beyerdynamic makes some of the most comfortable good-sounding closed phones available.

jessica00 - the answer to the question is "The Beyers are very comfortable"

The 250-80 might be a bit cramped if you have very large ears, otherwise it's great.
The 531 is very light and comfy.
Both would easily be more comfortable than the Sennheiser HD280pro IMHO, and velour pads beat pleather any day of the week.
