After a few days of tweaking, troubleshooting, and abandoning larger plans in favor of smaller ones that actually work, I finally hit play on the discman and heard Rostropovich playing cello, loud and clear -- my PPA is finally done. I haven't even tried it out with my good headphones yet, but I never expected to be impressed by the sound from the Sony earbuds I use as test phones.
Now it's off to play with the big headphones, and go through my entire music collection again, but not before expressing my gratitude to the many folks who have offered planning and troubleshooting advice (even if it wasn't to me -- I probably read your posts anyway). Thank you all, and expect to be billed for the tinnitus exams and treatment shortly
Some day I'll get my digital camera working again, and more professional looking casework, and then expect to see some pictures.
