hey all
i am looking to buy a versatile set of cans for anywhere from 50-100$

when i say versatile, i mean it
smily_headphones1.gif

im going to need them for everything
pc gaming , music of all genres (but mostly acoustic folk-pop) , to play my electric guitar, and maybe even for movies

I need balance between the highs mids and bass

i havent had a chance(and wont have a chance) to try anything other than the sony MDRV600s they seemed fine but i was at best buy and so didnt get to pick my sound sample or compare anything

ive been checking out the grado sr-60s but if they're as uncomfortable as some reviews say then i'll sacrifice the quality
also i'd prefer something that didnt leak as much, since ill be using them with my portable also

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Stay away from the V600's. Nothing exactly fits your criteria, but the Sony MDR-V6's may be your best bet. Not many decent closed phones in your price range. The Sennheiser HD497's are another great option (better sounding than the V6's and in the league of the SR-60's) and leak less than the Grados, but are still not closed.

Are there any electronics stores near you? If you posted where you live, perhaps someone could suggest a place to try them. Although the V6's are hard to find, but Senns tend to be in many electronic stores.

i dont really frequent any electronics stores other than best buy, im not usually looking for anything i wouldnt find there

i live in corona , ca but im moving to san diego in a few days

i knew there wouldnt be any one set of phones that matched perfectly but im trying to find something adequate for the money

edit- the closed/open factor is probably the least important of the criteria , i could always just stick with the streetstyle

headphones that came with my discman

that said, i dont think i could qualify one as most important

thanx for your reply

you're not going to be finding much in best buy...

_completely_ void of decent stuff

try circuit city for low-end senns...compusa has a few senns as well.

You can probably find the V6 at Fry's Electronics, if there is one near you.

I would say V6 or Senn HD497. And the 497 usually retails for less.

OR...Get the Koss KSC35 or KSC50 earclip phones, which are excellent (open) phones for half the price of those listed above. You'd have to order the 35 online, but the 50 is available at Best Buy/City City for about 20 bucks!

There's also the Grados at Cambridge Soundworks. San Dog opens it up some. You should be able to find the Senns, V6's and Grados nearby. Forget Best Buy. If all the above are not possiblities, go to a Target and pick up the Philips HP 170's for $20. Largeish Rite Aid's did have them on sale for $9.99 recently.

Since the open/closed issue isn't, seriously consider the 497's.

The HP170 is another headphone I was surprised to find at Fry's (Austin TX). $20 there, same as Target.

I'll chime in with the V6 recommendation. It can do nearly anything and is closed. They are becoming rather scarce online for new sets, but a local store might have them over there. IIRC, Sony also had some in their outlet store on Ebay for like $65.

If you print out the price from PC Mall for a pair of HD 280 Pro's you can probably pick up a pair from Guitar Center for $69.99, or you can try swinging by one of the two pc mall locations. There's one in Torrance, and another in Santa Monica.

Sony MDR V6 $79. bucks USD and incredible for the price.

I live in San Diego and there are two Fry's Electronics here, both carry the Sony MDR V6 cans for 79 bucks. these cans are great. by far the best ones ive tried when i was shopping for new cans a couple of weeks ago. i tried cans upwards of $150 that didnt sound as good as the v6 cans. this very website talked me into trying them out and after listening to them i HAD to own em. go try a set out.
