Habib,at the moment the MPX3 is my favorite amp.I've only listened with the HP2's so far. Over the weekend I just got lost in the music and wanted to keep on listening!

That's a combo that cannot be beat.

Hi Rob,what tubes are you using in your earmax m8?,thanks for the reply to my mail concerning the mpx3 ,i am considering several amps at the moment and trying to build as good a picture as possible of some of them without being able to hear for myself, solid state i can relate to but i am having more problems trying to picture the sound of these valve amps, because the emp is available easily in the uk i am still tending to edge towards that one to go with my cd3000"s

Tony I am currently using Telefunken ECC81 and 2 x Telefunken ECC88 in the EMP.The EMP is warmer than the MPX3 but has a narrower soundstage, its also very smooth. It is possible that with low impedence phones (32-40ohm) you may notice a slight power supply hum at low volume with certain tubes, the MPX3 on the other hand is dead silent at low volume.

What other amps are you considering?

Hi Rob, i am using the slee solo mk3 at the moment and with the cd3000"s and dac20 only just fully broken in i"m finding that the sound while very good can be seem a touch harsh in the extreme treble region after 1/2 an hour or so,the solomk3 is really intended first and formost to be used with a vinyl source which i no longer have it has a higher that usual input and that in conjunction with the 3000"s means that last night i was struggling to get the volume to even 1/5 on the control before distortion set in! buying a tube amp does concern me a little because the sound may just flip the other way for me and be a little to smooth i suspect, other amps of the solid state variety that interest me are the corda ha-2 and on the advice of markl the hr-2 which seems like a lot of very high quality components for the money,i did post an earlier thread in which some of the other headfi members were kind enough to give there views on this, thanks Tony

tonyli3,
the Earmax Pro respond GREATLY to tube rolling. you'll be able to fine tune it well, if you choose the right tubes for your taste. my guess is that the MPX3 won't fall from it. i admit that the EMP doesn't have the largest soundstage there is out there - but the sound is really great.. when i first heard it i could feel the tuby sounds going down my throat and touch a very special spot. i'll get it back from germany by the end of the week, i hope.
soon i'll review the EMP with all of my phones, including the newest member, the CD3000.

hi Adam,i fully intend to buy a tube amp a little further along in time when funds permit but following a lot of research and communication with many helpful people and considering my musical tastes as well i have decided to go with s/state for the moment in the form of the Jan Meia Prehead, at a good price! another factor for me was the very soon to be released power amp that will suit my needs very well a little way down the line,i spoke to Jan my email a couple of times today and the power amp sounds like it is very close to being ready! and Adam when i buy my tube amp i think i"ll go with the EMP as it looks so damn sexy, thanks for the help of everyone and i intend to use the forums more than i have in the past as you guy"s are so enthusiastic, it makes for a refreshing change,Tony

never go for looks, tony

if you buy a tube amp in the future, it might be that there will be comparisons between your optional amps on your favourite headphones by then. i think it's the best way to decide.. because everyone likes his gear - and you never know if it's better then the other's... until they are the same person to tell
